| Sometimes I like to make oldschool style videos with Cinepak video and 8 bit audio just to remind me of how desktop video started and how far it's come. The funniest thing is to compare two videos with approximately equal filesize, one compressed with Cinepak and 8 bit audio and one with DivX and mp3 audio. The difference is worlds apart. It still amazes me how long Cinepak takes to compress, I have an old book called "How to digitise video" which is a really fun read, and talks about leaving your computer on overnight to compress a few minutes of Cinepak video. Of course, decoding wise, Cinepak uses a billion times less CPU than DivX, so it's obvious that processing power is what has allowed these new codecs to do what they do more than just more advanced compression techniques. Well it's a fun to trip down memory lane. Sadly since VirtualDub doesn't support arbitrary framerate changing (yet!), I can't make them the nice sloppy 15 fps that would really make them seem oldschool. I do have a copy of 16-bit VidEdit somewhere though... |

| when i need to do 15fps out of 25fps i use avisynth: SelectEvery(5,1,2,4) but on the old times, with my pentium 133, i never used cinepack due to its slowness, but indeo 3.2 and the old pae(personal avi editor), what a funny program seen today, but i remember that didnt seem true to me to have my first clip encoded |
