Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Codec Discussion > Pc Has The Codec, But Vd Doesn't

Posted by: dazco Nov 10 2009, 07:58 PM
Why is it the movies i take with my casio camera in MOV format will play on my PC but they won't load in VD. Unfortunately i'm at work so i can't look at the mov files to find what codec they are using. But if it plays on my machine then obviously my machine has the proper codec, yet apparently VD doesn't seem to know that. I have FFdshow installed by the way. How can i get VD to recognize my MOV files? I know i can convert, but someone i know has a mac which plays most any video format i send, but none look right on it except the originals. so i want to be able to edit them in VD and save with direct stream copy.

VirtualDub natively does not support MOV files.

Use http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=12664.

And sorry,... but can't use Direct stream copy mode for QuickTime files (MOV).

Well, i couldn't figure out how to get it to work and there are at least 2 different zip files, one of which has a ton of files and neither has install instructions. So much for that. But then w/o DSC i guess it's not gonna help me anyways.

Just copy .vdplugin file to plugins subfolder.

Some other...
http://www.squared5.com/ can edit and save to MOV without re-encoding (required installed QuickTime).

BTW
What are A/V characteristics of MOV files form Your cam? Use http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net.
Video is DV, M-JPEG or H.264/AVC?
DV or M-JPEG - possible change container to AVI.
H.264/AVC - possible save to MP4 container (after editing in Avidemux).

putting that in the plugins folder was the first thing i tried, but no go. the codec is H.264/AVC

Tried that mpeg streamclip and it's great for cutting. Not much else tho?

Input plugins/drivers do not work on old versions of VirtualDub, also of course not on VirtualDubMod.
Quicktime input plugin required installed QuickTime.
DirectShow import driver required installed DirectShow filters (splitter and decoders - for example MP4 Splitter and ffdshow).
VirtualDub can save video only to AVI.

Quicktime input plugin...
When open file in VirtualDub change file types to Quicktime Video files (*.mov;*.mp4) (instead All types (*.mpg,*vob,...).
Set Ask for extended options after this dialog option.
In Quicktime import options change Video Decoder Mode to ICM Decomp.

DirectShow import driver...
When open file in VirtualDub change file types to DirectShow input driver.
If MOV files are not visible - first change file types to All types (*.*), choose file and then change file types to DirectShow input driver.

A little bit more options is available when encode (Export to Quicktime).
Can delete fragments video (and several other 'operations'), not only cut into parts...

Alternatively... can use Avidemux.
MP4 should not cause trouble for Quicktime.

You also need to put the Quicktime.ini in the root folder of Virtualdub.

Not sure if you still need to have an H264 decoder on your system. I have three or four on mine.

For current plugin version does not required.

No.
Can use QuickTime (ICM Decomp for AVC).
Also can use VfW codec, but it's bad idea (incorrect decoding).

VFW mode (when used QuickTime input pluigin) is useful only in certain cases - for example if .mov file contain video encoded by XviD.
