Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Codec Discussion > Problem With Vmnc (vmware) Codec

Posted by: benn333 Oct 5 2009, 10:15 AM
I'm having some trouble transcoding files from videos recorded VMware 6.5.

They play fine so long as the VMware Movie Decoder is installed, but when these files are opened in VirtualDub, they appear skewed and in black and white. (I'd post a screenshot, but I can't seem to get the IMG tag option in this forum to work.) When transcoded the resulting files carry on this issue.

In VirtualDub's compression options, under Format restrictions, it says:
Couldn't find compatible format.
Possible reasons:
* Codec may only support YUV
* Codec might be locked.
* Codec might be decompression-only

Any ideas on how to correct this?

This is generally related to issues with the decoder having problems with pixel widths that aren't a multiple of four. You'll know if this is the case if you go to Video > Color Depth and choose 16-bit RGB for the input format, and suddenly all odd widths are the ones that fail, and if videos that are multiples of four in width are always OK regardless.

As for the codec not being available for compression, that's normal. VMWare probably only ships a decoder so you can use it to watch videos created by their software; they aren't in the business of shipping codecs for other people to use.

(Sorry for the slow response. I'd mistakenly assumed I'd be notified by email when there was a reply and hadn't checked back on the forum.)

Phaeron, thank you. It turns out that the VMware session I was screencasting in was set to 1281x721. Seems I'd increased the window size of VMware slightly. Set it back to 1280x720 and it's working fine. smile.gif

Now comes the problem with all the footage I've recorded at 1281x721. Is there any way I can fix this or do I have to toss the footage? I've tried the resize filter, setting it to Absolute pixels with the Aspect ratio disabled, but that didn't work.

Can you open these files in WMP?

You could try the DirectShow input filter if you can. (Link is in one of the stickies of the filter forums).

You may also be able to read the videos successfully if you set the input format to 32-bit RGB.

Third idea is to bug VMware to fix their decoder. smile.gif

Fixed. smile.gif

The videos do play in WMP. I got the DirectShow input driver and put it in the plugins folder, but couldn't figure out how to use it. (Not enough time atm to troubleshoot.) So I changed the input format to 32-bit RGB and it looks like it works. smile.gif

I've been pulled off onto another project at the moment, but I'll run through my footage later and ensure they transcode correctly. Shouldn't be a problem now.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the help. I'm a big fan of VirtualDub for dealing with stuff like this!

For the future: select DirectShow input filter in the 'file type' section of the open file dialog.

Ok, cool. I'm always adding files by drag-and-drop, which explains why I wasn't seeing the option.
