Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Codec Discussion > My Virtualdub Doesn't Have H.264 In Compression

Posted by: kame0000 Jul 1 2009, 08:42 AM
When I select "compression..", I have only 14 types to choose even though I've already downloaded DivX7 from www.divx.com.

How do I increase the number of formats in compression menu?
And what are the best formats for compression without losing the video quality? (I've heard that h.264 is on of them.)

ps. how to post picture in this forum?

Are you using VirtualDub 64 bit.

You post pictures on this forum by uploading them to an imagehosting service and posting the link here. Preferably without image tags if the pictures are large.

Well... You have installed DivX 6.8.5 video codec (VfW codec) and eventually DivX H.264 decoder (DirectShow filter, which is not supported by VD (only VfW codecs)).

Install some (what You need) VfW codecs.

For example, can install unofficial http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/ codec.
However, from some reasons it is not recommended to use x264 as VfW.
Also, native container for H.264/AVC is MP4.

I do not know what is 'best' (for You)...
x264 it's lossy codec (exclude - x264 lossless).
MPEG-4 AVC is just more modern than older MPEG-4 ASP.
