Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Codec Discussion > Converting Wma To Mp3

Posted by: ergosum Jan 22 2009, 06:54 AM
Over the years, I've accumulated a fair share of WMA's (100's) purchased through alltunes from allofmp3. My home is more multi-platform now, and I want to convert all of my WMAs to MP3s.

Searching for free tools, there are zillions of them. I just want to convert my 160kbps WMAs to the best sounding 192kbps MP3s. Is one tool better than the other? Is there a specific one that experts around here recommend?

Thanks.

For compressing to MP3, I am a huge fan of LAME.

If you are (or want to be) an audiophile I highly recommend these forums:

mp3 achieved from wma will never sounds better then wma

as to the hydrogen, they will probably say same thing "don't do this coz converting one lossy format to another is bad, m'kay"

If you're going to do the conversion, you might want to consider ramping up the bitrate higher. Unless you're tight on storage for some reason, like a portable device, you're better off just making the files 20-30% bigger instead of accumulating too many artifacts. Of course, this assumes that you're not already archiving the WMAs for future use.
