Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > General Discussion > Variable Long Delay Before Capping Start

When I press F6 in VirtualDub to start capping it lasts anywhere between 1 and 20 sec to start capturing. I remember this problem from years ago, on another computer with, except for the Miro, totally different hardware, I tried alot things then but it disappeared without obvious reason. Recently I reinstalled Windows 98 oem and the problem came up again, and before the reinstallation i could cap with no noticable delay. When I run Filemon from Sysinternals I get a gap in disk access as long as that delay. Also, my computer is very sluggish, almost doesn't respond within that delay. Any ideas? I can try various things but I hate that since my installation is now, behalve this problem, exactly how I want so I made some diskimages.

If you remember, there are a host of speed patches that are needed. They are still on the Miro site. Make sure you are using the last capture program they released. richard photorecall.net

I use the latest driver 1.41a and virtualdub to capture since the included capture application is not worth a penny compared to virtualdub. Also, a week ago i had no delay at all, with same driver. It's a real pain since i mostly cap short parts to select later on frames from it, so if I need to wait 20 sec sometimes, I missed it! There must be a specific reason for that delay, it's not less performance or so. Btw, it seems the drivers for the Miro card are scattered around the web. Do you know a specific url that contains updates or information? I know Pinnaclesys but I 've seen differences in latest versions between English and German sites.

I accidently found how to solve it. I had display problems (text corruption) in alot textediting applications and i tried replacing riched20.dll in the win98/system folder, and those problems were solved and i also discovered that the capping is now always instantly. It was a dll delivered with win98 oem 5.0.152.0 and i replaced it with 5.30.22.2300 which is 422k instead or 292k. I'm very sure this was the reason cause nothing else changed (i use harddiskimages when i start trying things).

Scrap my previous post. I'd better wait a day to cry for victory.

I noticed following issues: - After pressing F6 to start capturing, my system is not sluggish as I said but doesn't react on anything, mouse pointer freezes, even ctrl alt del combination does nothing, for anything between 2 and 20 secs. - While capturing, when i scroll through an earlier captured video, I get lost alot frames, AND it doesn't matter if that earlier captured video is on the same drive i'm capturing to or on a different physical drive. Despite that, i checked if DMA is enabled, I also downloaded a tool for the builtin highpoint ide raid controller (no raid used) which also stated DMA, which said Ultra-DMA mode 5 (ATA-100). The same amount lost frames happen when i save a chunk to another physical drive (which is obvious i think). So what can be the reason? This is the same pc, the hardware didn't change a thing, as before i reinstalled Windows 98. I installed the same drivers as before, actually I have them all ready on some drives in case of reinstallation. A couple weeks ago I used the same drives, the same OS, the same background applications, I could capture virtually immediately, with no noticeable delay. Also, I could load and edit (cut) or save an avi in one instance of virtualdub while another instance is capturing, all from the same drive, and WITHOUT a SINGLE frame loss. I really start to get annoyed by this, since I miss alot stuff or have incomplete clips. While I'm waiting for capturing actually starts, VirtualDub says in the status bar (translated from Dutch): "Busy with settings for registration. Please wait." When I stop capturing, and immediately start again, there is no delay. When I change application and return to VirtualDub after a littlewhile then I have that 'random' looking delay again.
