Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > General Discussion > File Size Only Increases With Compression

Hello,

I'm using the newest VDub with xvid codecs. I'm trying to compress a 6 minute 70mb .avi into a smaller file size, but I lower the bitrate (I think) and the thing ends up coming out 10 mb bigger after the 2nd pass. I'm relatively new to this, maybe someone could help me with proper figures to put in the bitrate calculator when setting up pass 2 since I'm obviously doing something wrong.

This next window is what I don't get. Does the first box mean how big I want the file to be? I don't think it works like that, obviously. Changing the number to something low like 20,000 doesn't change anything.

Thanks for any help.

Bitrate calculator is a calculator. It doesn't affect the codec settings.

what do you change then to get a smaller size?

Target size in the XviD configuration.

For video editing, I use vdub. For video compression, I use freemake video converter and I save the nonsense of compression headaches.
