| Wouldn't it save lots of space with VBR possibility? What program does other people use when they can use the VBR ability? I thought VirtualDub was the best encoding program for XviD and MKV. |

| VDub already have internal support for VBR MP3 Audio Streams |

| It doesn't say CBR or VBR. The highest I have is: "MPEG Layer-3 56 kBit/s, 24,000 Hz, Stereo 7KB/s". Therefor I installed LAME. |

It looks just as default system MP3 codec. Fraunhofer MPEG Layer-3 Audio Codec for MSACM - advanced version (l3codeca.acm). "... this advanced version encodes up to 56kbps, and decodes as above." It's not relate with VirtualDub. Instead, can use Lame MP3 ACM codec or... ... Fraunhofer profesional version (l3codecp.acm), if have installed WMP10. Simply trick... "Just go to c:\windows\system32 and rename l3codeca.acm to l3codeca.bak. Then copy l3codecp.acm to l3codeca.acm (swaps the professional one in place of the old advanced one)."
Example Lame encoder with some GUI.
No. Because VD just use installed codecs to encoding A/V. |

| To be more specific, VirtualDub has support for importing VBR MP3s -- if you compress to .mp3 and then bring it in via Audio > Audio from other file, you will get the option to select VBR mode. It doesn't have support for encoding to VBR because the installed codecs in Windows generally don't support it and the Windows codec API doesn't support it either. |

| Is there a program that will let me make a VBR out of the MP3 CBR I export from VirtualDub and then import back to VirtualDub? Or are there no supporting saving modes for VBR? Would saving audio Direct Stream do that or is this kind of like saving as wav? |

Lots? Don't expect lots...
Just used external audio converters.
Example BonkEnc and many other audio converters.
Yes. To export: File > Export > Raw audio... (Use Save WAV..., if audio is PCM.) To import: Audio > Audio from other file... Actual VirtualDub support VBR audio. However i'm not see sense for recompress MP3 CBR>VBR. Loss quality and not much saving space (comparing to video stream). |
