Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Testing / Bug Reports > How To Make Vd Use Sar/par And Dar Informations

Posted by: rmanal Jan 15 2012, 10:38 AM
Hello,

I have a DV file with size 720x480 but with SAR: 3/2, PAR: 8/9, DAR=PAR*SAR:4/3.
But when I open it in VD it displays a 720*480 file with square pixel: so how to tell VD to use SAR and PAR informations instead of resizing the file with another method inducing a degradation of the quality?

Thank you
Rmanal

You can't. Signalling DAR/PAR is up to the codec. You will have to set this manually when you export in the codec settings..

OK thank you. It could be an improvement as this information is essential in the visualization of the video.
Nevertheless I don't how to set it manually: could you give me an exemple please, with one codec?

Thank you

It is not possible to make it because VirtualDub does not control codec settings.

Depends on what codec you are using.

Video Tab > Format Out

OK but in a DV file we have SAR= 3/2, PAR= 8/9. And in this video tab we can only set a PAR. So how to also set the SAR in order to retrieve a correct 4/3 file format?

Thank you

What you mean with SAR is just horizontal resolution divided by the vertical resolution. There is no reason to explicitly set that.

SAR is the stockage aspect ratio, in the case of DV it is equal to 1.5: if you don't take it into account how to retrieve a 4/3 ratio?

That value isn't storedin DV either. Again, it's horizontal devided by vertical resolution. (720/480=1.5)

OK I have said a stupid thing.
Thank you for your help.
