| I was messing with BIOS overclocking processor and memory. Computer (AMD) became faster but a bit unstable. I assume neverbefore seen Virtualdub crazy photo output can also be contributed to that. Virtualdub serves me well for some photo editing and i use export image sequence in PNG mostly (Jpeg output reduces color dynamics). Original photo made with Jupiter 4/200mm. The graphics superimposed by Virtualdub - green on first, red on second photo. Procedure could not be repeated.   |

| Yes, overclocking can cause problems like this. It's a bit unusual for the PNG image routines to be affected since they aren't really optimized and I'd expect something else to blow up first, but if an error happens in the prediction routines or in the image memory you'll get effects like this. The image prediction algorithms are cumulative and the result is artifacts going right and down. If you try the exact same operation multiple times and sometimes it works, it's a pretty good sign that you need to stop overclocking. That having been said, some of these symptoms could also be caused by marginal memory, so you might try running a memory test if you really want to keep overclocking. Overclocking is a funny thing. As a user, it's really awesome to get a faster system for cheap. As a programmer, the last thing you want to deal with is a CPU that occasionally burps up an error.... |
