Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Testing / Bug Reports > Srt Subtitles

While trying to import a srt files into a mkv, i noticed that the detected duration done by VirtualDubMod was faulty. Duration of the subtitles was supposed to be ~2hours, and VDM only detected half an hour. VDM just did not issue error message about it.

Then, I tried to edit the srt file, and to check synthax around the end of the first half hour. I found nothing like special caracters or 2 subtitles overlaying in time, or else.

Then i imported this srt file in SubRip, which warned me about 49 time overlay issues in the whole file!!

Conclusion: Could you please add messages about the correctness of srt files we try to import in VDM? Also Could you please give info on where and why VDM stopped parsing a not-so-correct srt file? Many thanks for your work!

The next version (based on VirtualDub 1.5.4) will help you here.
If errors are spotted in the file you will be warned (thanks to the 'Log' feature Avery Lee added). To have more information of all the errors spotted (subtitle number, position in file, kind of error) you will then have to go and see the 'Streams -> Report' window.
This window writes a report on all the streams currently opened in VirtualDubMod, and gives details (specific information, errors, ...) when possible.

Also errors spotted in the file won't stop the parsing anymore :
- if the subtitle just overlaps with the previous one, then some of the subtitles won't be rendered when being written in 'linear' containers (OGM); Matroska can support overlapping subtitles but this needs some hack in VirtualDubMod so it isn't currently supported
- if the error is more serious (the subtitle starts before the previous subtitle, the start and end time are incorrect, etc.) then the subtitle will be discarded (the report tells you about this)
