Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Testing / Bug Reports > Windows Xp Shuts Down When Vdub Is Processing

Hi, I am running Virtual Dub 1.5.1 on my Dell SmartStep 250N (with a desktop Pentium 4) running Windows XP. Sometimes, when I am processing video and/or audio using VDub, my computer will suddenly shut down without warning. I never receive an error message or anything, it just shuts down. This only seems to happen when I am compressing something, but it can happen with either video or audio. I have not yet had it happen with Direct Stream Copy, but it has happened when I was compressing to both XviD and DivX 4.12 (the video codecs I have used), and also when compressing to either MP3 or Ogg Vorbis. I think it may have even happened when I was decompressing the audio to an uncompressed WAV file. Anyway, I am not sure what could be causing it but it happens fairly frequently. I end up having to do my projects in parts to make sure I don't lose all my progress at once. If I need to provide any more info, let me know. Hope to hear from someone more knowledgeable than me (not that difficult on this subject) soon. Thanks, SoulOfMyShoe

Hi Soul, So... it doesn't even go to a blue or black screen with a Windows error? It doesn't even reboot? It just shuts down? That is odd behavior indeed. Please post any other details you can.

Nope, there is no warning whatsoever. Usually I will just be watching a video file or something (although it happens when VDub is the only thing running as well) and the screen will suddenly turn off, and in about a second, the computer will shut off as well. There is only one thing that I could think may be causing it that is unique about my system. It is a laptop, adn I spilled some wine of the keyboard about a month ago. About half the keys on the keyboard don't work anymore (I am using an external keyboard right now), so maybe there is a short somewhere in the system or something, but it has never done this while I wasn't running Virtual Dub. Also, if it is going to happen, it usually happens near the beginning of the compression, some time within the first 5-10 minutes (which is of course varying percentages of doneness for the compression based on what I am compressing.) I don't know of much more info that I haven't provided, but feel free to ask specific questions and I will try to answer them as well as I can. Thanks again, SoulOfMyShoe
