Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > VirtualDub Development Forum > Request: Variable Bit Rate Sound

I would like to see support for Variable Bit Rate Sound. There are a lot of people encoding VBR Sound, and it is often done improperly. Currently, VirtualDub merely un and re -compresses the sound with a constant bitrate. This usually has the effect of misaligning the sound with the video.
Also, support for encoding properly in VBR Sound would be appreciated.

Thanks,

It ain't gonna happen. The AVI file format was written in stone a long time ago, and it absolutely doesn't support VBR audio. Those people who are trying to force VBR audio into AVIs are making broken movies. Hardly a day goes by that someone doesn't post here complaining about a broken movie they downloaded from Kazaa.

But if you really want to use VBR audio, there are lots of other formats which do support it:

- MPEG
- OGM
- Matroska
- Windows Media (WMV)

The original VirtualDub can only produce AVI files, but I think VirtualDubMod can make OGM and Matroska files.
