| Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > News / Announcements > Gstreamer Successfully Ported To Windows |

| Hi, please allow me to make this short announcement here : The matroska team finally succeeded to port http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/ to Windows, and natively ( not using mingw ), all the necessary mods are in the Gstreamer CVS already and the Windows port gets full support from the Gstreamer team. Steve 'robux4' Lhomme, one of matroska's core developers, has gstreamer itself as well as about 60 plugins compiling with MSVC7. Not all plugins were tested so far, but generally its looking pretty good. Compiled Binaries available from here : http://mukoli.free.fr/gstreamer/ Our next goal is now to have working output sinks for video and audio, so that some devs could probably look into getting gst-player to work on Windows. Portaudio seems to be a very nice basement to stand on, also with respect to porting Gstreamer to other platforms in the future, like Mac OSX ( works already via fink, but a native compile would also be nice one day ) - more news on this to follow later. After working output sinks, the team will start to create a simple encoder application using the existing FFMPEG encoder plugin, and outputting to MP4 and native MPEG4 MKVs, and maybe even to MPEG. Input files can be any supported audio/video format, means quite a lot The final goal, of course, is to - create a tool with a similar functionality than Virtualdub has, but fully VFR capable, and allowing MP4, MPEG and MKV output ( later : Ogg Theora, DivX6, RMVB ) - define a simple but powerful codec API, allowing codec developers to make their own codecs for use with this editor/encoder app, to be stored in MKV or MP4 container - port Gstreamer itself, as well as all apps and plugins also to Mac OSX, FreeBSD, *NIX, etc. , thus creating the first truely open multimedia framework with support on all existing platforms. More News to come soon ChristianHJW Administrator of the Vdub Support Forum matroska project admin |

AviSynth v3.0 won't. It will take a while before it's ready for alpha release. But, for example, the ffmpeg source plugin is already working (both for windows and linux). You might want to join freenode#avisynth. |

| did i just heard linux or mac user saying "M$", or was it just another windows user that just puts dollar sign instead of "S", by mistake? (as a windows users who puts a dollar sign there is a hypocrite) avs3? i would take care that bugs of previous versions are cured first... http://virtualdub.everwicked.com/index.php?act=ST&f=16&t=7553 |

Hey i4004, you are not allowed to be playing the big nitpicker here, simply because you arent German, and its us Germans who are well known to be the worldchampions in nitpicking. Or are you just bored and have to write 'something', to be a little less bored ? Many people, like me, are on Windows because they are forced to use it at work ( and if i say 'forced', you better believe me - most bosses dont give a dime about your wishes to use another OS than the rest of the company does ), and dont have the nerves to use another OS at home, searching for all the software you want to use for both OS, etc. .... so its perfectly valid to use Windows, and still write 'M$' to express that you dont really like having to do that.
:sigh: ...... ' .... si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses ..' ..... Sometimes developers have to make a decision, like if they feel that their existing code is too complicated or the basic outline of the software forbids to develop it further. Then he has to make a clear cut, and start from scratch on a piece of white paper. Current Avisynth is suffering from the same kind of limitations as AVI, mainly because its using the same framework, i.e. Video for Windows. So, its definitely a wise decision to make Avisynth 3, and not on VfW anymore ..... |

no, i'm not bored....plenty of stuff to cap/encode today ( i still mind people using ms products and calling it names.... ("look at me, i bought this bike ,and it's shit, but i'll be using it on a daily basis anyway".............????? i don't like this kind of talk; go get a nice bike...suffering is not a way to spend your life if you can help it...)
in my eyes, it's not: not valid at all. do you say $ony, or pana$onic, or $harp, or philip$, or mercede$ or stuff like that? so what's making microsoft so special? all corporations are $$$ driven...so what? i'm seeing goodies coming from ms much more than from any other software company, so i don't see a reason to discredit it; in a way, it's childish....it is a custom on doom9 forum; childish.... they all use windows and all call it m$ one could even say that desktop video is where it's at because of ms! i mean..they didn't had to introduce vfw in win3.1 at all, did they? (mac os or linux introduced video in OS at that time?what linux? even a linux of today is not a nice video tool at all...) if they didn't introduced vfw that long ago would you bitch today because there's no framework for video at all? they are making money on OS'? damn, a company that made win2000 should make some money indeed! do you want a world without win and ms? install linux, be consistent! let's see how far will that take you.
i don't care on what does it run (it can run on whisky if you ask me) i just want it to work OK..... and this problem is making me a bit angry..... (the problems i have with avs, i mean) i love avs and everything, but i want it to work as declared.
and your code will be less complicated than vfw? also i already said that for my purpose, i don't see advantage of wdm over vfw at all. and besides capping we mostly have dvd-ripping; but dual-layer drives are coming.... this is not ment to be discouragement; but the fact is; vfw is here and it works but also i hope matroska will be able to beat vfw...sure, why not? when it's ready, i'll try it too.... for me to use it, it would need to do all the stuff vfw does, but faster.... |
