It looks like when I use the direct stream method I lose the sound on the video clip, any idea why? Also before when I save the file as avi in the direct stream method the file will be very close to the original size, now the size is 4 times the original file size

Thanks in advance

With my psychic skills not working and having to guess what plugins and kinds of files your using and that you did indeed select direct stream copy mode for both audio and video
Then I'll guess the problem is that thing over there, move it a bit to the right settings and click that other thing and that'll fix it

What do you mean move it to the right setting?

Yes in direct stream method would mean both 'direct stream copy' in both 'audio' and 'video.'

In the past when I chose that method the video would save very fast and the file size would be slightly larger or slightly smaller than the original file size by a couple of mb...like a 500mb file would be 503 or 490 for example.

I check another file and the sound seems to be working, so it must be that one odd file that has an issue with sound. but I'm still experiencing the huge increase in size when I save the files as avi file

That second sentence in the reply of dloneranger is just a little joke to make you understand that we need more information about your problem, before we can give you an answer that is adequate.

So:
- what (container-)format is the original file (MKV, MP4, MOV, FLV, ...) ?
- what is the VirtualDub plugin that you have used to open it (Matroska, QuickTime, FLV, FFMpeg, ...) ?
- what are the codecs that have been used for audio- and video-compression ?

You should be able to get most of this information via File > File information... (once the video-file is open in VirtualDub).

The most common reason for much larger files than the original ones is normally not having chosen for a compression codec
(via the Audio-menu > Compression... and/or the Video-menu > Compression...) AND not having chosen for "Direct Stream Copy".

Regards.

Another reason for files being larger than they should when you are absolutely sure you have selected direct stream copy for audio and video is that "Automatically load linked segments" is ticked in the "open video file" dialog box
If it's ticked then it'll append any other files that have the same name but a higher number at the end eg file01.avi, file02.avi
That's easy to spot though as the finished video will be longer than the original you loaded
So if your finished video is 2 hours long instead of 30 minutes, that's what happened

Thank you everyone lol. I noticed the sarcasm but I didn't want to respond back with sarcasm because I know everyone is just trying to help despite the sarcasm lol. Also I might sound like a dummy myself so I dont mind being made fun of tongue.gif sorry sometimes I might sound vague, it's cus I have so little knowledge of this stuff *hides* so please dont mind me tongue.gif

I actually restarted the computer and for some reason the problem is fixed, the direct stream doesnt result in a huge file no more. But the problem I have now is when I use a splitting program to split the files it gives me this message

"The source AVI file is encoded with an improper VBR audio"

I thought it's not a problem but when I tried splitting the file and then joining it on virtualdub by appending it, the sound and picture is messed up.

is there a fix for this? I must be missing a codec perhaps?

This is how my plugins folder looks like, not sure if I have something extra that's making virtual dub messed up for me or perhaps missing something. Hope someone can help out

Hi Pral,

It seems like you have the VirtualDub input plugins for:
- QuickTime (MOV, MP4)
- MPEG2 (MPG2, VOB)
- Mastroska (MKV)
- WMV
These plugins make it possible to open several formats of video-files, but they depend on additional video- and audio-decoders that must be present on your computer.

You did not yet answer the questions like:
- what is the original format of the file(s) you are working with ?
- (if it is not AVI-format) what input plugin are you using in VirtualDub to open it and which video- and audio-decoders do you see ? (look in File > File information when the file is open)
- what program are you using to split the file up (I gues it must be "Boilsoft Video Splitter" ?), and if so, do you recompress the audio with it ?

Normally, VirtualDub gives you a warning about AVI-files with VBR audio, but it should not have a problem to recompress it correctly.

Google results about the warning message:

I'm trying to open up MP4 file. It opens fine on virtualdub after I downloaded quicktime plugin from dloneranger's signature. Also I put the quicktime file into the main folder too, not sure if that helped. I downloaded the other files like for matroska and I placed the filter into the plugin folder, how about the file that's named "matroska-source.7z" is that suppose to go in the virtual dub main folder too? Because I downloaded that "matroska-source.7z" and just left it in the download folder huh.gif

This is what shows up when I check the file information

I use "Video Splitter" to open up the file and split it. Because it doesnt recognize mp4 files, I would normally do a direct stream copy from virtualdub which will turn the file into an AVI file. Then open the AVI file in the splitter program so I can edit out the parts I dont need. Then I would take those split files and join them back on virtualdub. This whole process would take less than 5 minutes. Like the virtual dub, I didnt have problems with this splitter program before I recovered my computer either.
Here's what the program looks like and the message it gives me when I open up a file I just direct stream from virtual dub. This message never popped up before. Nonetheless, I tried doing both options, recompressing the audio stream by clicking yes and also picking the no option. Both files end up corrupt when I join them on virtual dub, the picture and sound is messed up

I also get this message when I try to use "full compressing mode" for the audio

I know the problem isnt the files I'm working because I'm testing this whole thing out with the same video files I know once worked on virtual dub unsure.gif It's frustrating because I know it should work fine so I don't know what I'm doing wrong. At first I thought it might be the video file that's conflicting, so I started testing with files I've direct stream and split in the past before I recovered my computer. Could it be my computer that's missing a codec?

Thanks Abrazo & Dloneranger, really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. Sorry if I sound vague and clueless, hopefully the pictures explain what I'm saying a bit better tongue.gif

It seems like you are missing the AAC ACM audio-decoder.
You can find it here:

To make it easier to install, you can use the SetupAACacm_X86_X64.zip (thanks to dloneranger).

N.B.: Take care to not confuse between AAC and AC3 (they are NOT the same).

Pral, that was a much better message, with enough info to work with

Yes, it's the aac codec that's missing, but you might want to install the aac one as well, if you haven't installed one already (links in my sig)

You video splitter doesn't want to split files with strange VBR audio, so you need to convert to something else in that program or virtualdub
(It's warning you because the audio may be out of sync after splitting)

So you have three choices

1) Convert the audio to something like mp3 cbr in virtualdub (Lame mp3 codec's in my sig) so the splitters happy

2) Let your splitting program convert the audio

3) Did you know that you can delete parts of video etc in virtualdub itself and save doing the split/join part completely?
At the bottom of virtualdub there are the control buttons - the two on the right hand edge are 'set selection start' and 'set selection end'
Move to the start of a part you want to cut out, click the left one of those two buttons to set the selection start
Move to the end of a part you want to cut out, click the right one of those two buttons to set the selection end
(You should see that part of the timeline slider has a highlighted bit to show what you selected)
On the edit menu, click 'delete' to delete the selected part
Repeat that until you've removed all the parts you don't want
The set all your compression options and save
Or...
If you only want a bit of the video you can set the start and end, then save - only the selected part will be saved

There is a gotcha though
In direct stream copy mode for the video, you can only start a cut on a keyframe - if you pick something before a keyframe it'll start the cut a bit before (wherever the previous keyframe is)
In full processing mode, you can start a cut anywhere

When I try downloading and installing "SetupAACacm_X86_X64.zip" this is the message I get

I will try splitting up the files on virtual dub, I never knew that was possible.

Thanks to both of you for helping me out! If I dont get a chance to come back again today, just want to wish both of you and everyone else a happy new year!!! Cheers!

Try right clicking it and 'run as administrator'
(it should be asking for admin permissions automatically, I'll have to check the installer)

Also I put "MP4InputDriver" plugin into my plugins32 folder and I'm able to do full processing for audio no problem, but when I open the file on the splitter program this is the message I get instead of the message I got previously without the "MP4InputDriver"
