I'm adding in the .ssa file to a Divx .avi and everthing works okay except when I go to save AVI. With no compression it turns out to be 34 gigs, something I don't want or need to deal with. With Divx 5.02 compression the file goes from the original file size without the subs of about 700 megs to a file with subs at about 450 megs and the image isn't as good. My question is this, how do I save the file with subs and the same quality as before I added in the subs? The quality after compression isn't too bad, but I'm too much of a perfectionist to let it go. I want the same image quality with the subtitles added.

Hi wanderer

Did you try to get a divX comression ratio such that the final file has about 700 MB like the file without subtitles has? Compare the result with the original file.

When you apply filters on compressed video the result often has inferior quality. A solution for the subtitle case could be a modified player. Playing the original DivX file with subtitles from an external script. This is the way DVD goes too.
