I have started to experience a problem with VirtualDub, whereby capturing video is using twice as much disk space as the last time I used the program.
I have set aside a partition on my HDD for capturing AVI files, of just less than 8GB. With my current settings, this is enough for about 45-50 mins worth of video. Or at least it was. I started to capture a clip earlier, and the time left indicator displayed on the right hand side of the VirtualDub shows that there is only about 22 mins worth of capturing space left. There are currently no other files on this partition, so with my current capture settings unchanged, the amount of capture time left, should show as about 45-50 mins from the moment I start the capture.
I have not altered any of my capturing settings since the last time that I used VirtualDub, so I thought an update to a newer version would help. I removed VirtualDub version 1.4.10, and replaced it with version 1.4.11. Unfortunately, this did not resolve the problem, as this newer version is also using twice as much HDD space as it should with my usual settings.
So, what gives . . . ? |

If you are doing a single file capture to a FAT32 partition, VirtualDub will not report time available for more than 4GB of space, since that is the maximum file size in that filesystem and the most you can actually use. Since you had 8GB free, it appeared as though it was reporting half space, even though with 20GB free you would have seen the same duration. NTFS partitions or mounted paths that VirtualDub cannot recognize the filesystem for (network drives) will report the full duration. Full duration is also reported if you have multi-segment capture active.

If you mean the filesize has doubled, then that is most likely due to a change in compression settings or video format. Are you sure they are the same? |
