Hello,
Having a bit of a trouble to get the capture mode working.
I just want to capture my screen, to make a video about a software.
I used FRAPS but the video is blurr the first 30 seconds, so I decided to try and use Virtual Dub.
Problem is, there is no source available in the menu " SOURCES" and the preview displays a black screen. When I capture, it only records the microphone.
I installed : CCCP codec pack Ffdshow Reinstalled graphic card (GTX 570) screen samsung T220 plugged on the DVI. Tried different version of VD, including the x64, and x86 one. Tried various different video compression (FFD, x264, xVid)...
Can you please help me ?
Thank you very much !

When you are in VirtualDub "capture mode" (= after File > Capture AVI...):
click in the Device-menu > select "Screen Capture" click in the Video-menu > Source... > in this dialogbox: >> uncheck "Use OpenGL hardware acceleration" >> choose at preference "Use fixed offset" X=0 Y=0 >> choose what part of the screen you want to capture (= the Panning area) >> choose wether you want to "Capture mouse pointer image" > click OK Now you should see the actual screen
If you want, you may choose in the Video-menu "No display"
via Video-menu > Compression... you can set the video compression codec and its settings via Audio-menu > Compression... you can set the audio compression codec and its settings
via File > Set Capture file... you indicate a destination file
via F6 you can start the capture / via ESCape you can stop the capture |

That's fantastic, thank you, manage to see the preview and record it.
The only problem I've got now is that I am limited regarding the screen size, even though the "all desktop" is ticked in "source".

What you first see and get via Video > Set custom format... are a number of 'presets', but you are not limited to that.
You can check/activate 'Use custom size' in this dialogbox.
After that, you can set the size that you want to capture, corresponding to the screen size, like for example, 1600 x 900.
Regards.

Even though I still haven't have video source, I am able to get a preview as well as a video file when I capture it.
Problem is, it's only a part of my desktop that is being captured. |

1) VIDEO SOURCE The Video > Video source = "No video sources" is normal when doing screen capture. There are only video sources mentioned when external capturing devices are connected to the pc.
2) ONLY PART OF THE DESKTOP In Video > Source... Did you select "Entire desktop" ? What is the actual 'Screen Resolution' of your desktop ? Did you set identical values in Video > Set custom format... ? Maybe some other settings like Video > Cropping... ?
Myself, I did a test with 1600x900 and the complete desktop is being captured. |

ok so this helped me with the problem i was having Thanks, not being able to capture full desktop but now my issue is.. after i "start" capture virtualdub pretty much freezes and won't allow me to stop recording i have to manually ctrl/alt/delete, task manager to end task.
what i'd like to do is capture without compression then later edit and encode, is this possible? in the compression options i tried "Uncompressed RGB/YCbCr but this failed as well.
is there any way i can capture to a lossless video then edit and encode later? i'm using windows 7 64 bit and am realizing more and more it's a big source of most of my issues, win7 is decent it's the 64 bit part i think is the problem.
also.. i have no "capture devices" i'm not trying to capture from dv, vhs.. etc.. just my desktop but is this a problem? if so where can i find any "capture devices" i might need? i googled around but didn't really find anything i thought was helpful.
i can "get" just about any program to do this but i have been in love with virtualdub since i got a computer, around '99 or so and one way or another it's all i've ever needed and have donated every chance i get because the world needs virtualdub!!! |

1) Sometimes it is a problem to Stop the capturing via Escape key What you can do is set a limit on file size or time via Capture > Stop conditions...
2) Capturing to non compressed AVI will give you very large files What you can do is use a lossless compression codec like Lagarith
3) When you have Windows 7 - 64-bit, there is nothing that hold you back to install VirtualDub 32-bit in combination with 32-bit codecs
4) Capturing devices in VirtualDub are listed up in the Device-menu, there you can find "Screen capture" |

I'd advise going to 1.10.3 if you are doing screen capture, as it has some changes to prevent the program from locking up if the system can't keep up. |
