OK folks...here's a mystery!
I'm capturing component 1080i 1920x1080 from my Sony FX1, through Intensity Pro. After about 1 min 20 sec., Virtualdub starts inserting frames (not dropping). Frame insertion start out slow, then accelerates.
System specs: Dual core Opteron 180 (2.4 ghz) 4 gigs ram Vista 32 bit. 2 x 250 GB Sata drives in RAID 0 for capture (motherboard RAID controller).
Codec: I've tried Huffyuv 2.1.1 (squid_80 mod), AMV2MT, AMV3 and Blackmagic Mjpeg. I've set these codecs up to run lossless and I've also tried 4:1 compression and higher. I've tried 4.2.2 color space and 4.2.0. They all start inserting frames after anywhere from 1min17sec to 1min25sec. no matter what the settings!
My CPU runs below 100% - usually around 65 to 70%...sometimes even lower depending on codec settings.
I've ran several tests on the capture drive. Blackmagic's disk test says it can handle 50fps at 8 bit 1080p 4.2.2...I'm capturing as low as 29.97fps 1080i, 4.2.0.
I've gone into Task Manager and given Vdub high priority. I've disconnected from any network. I've turned off antivirus and Firewall. I've made sure I have no other program running. I've run my registry cleaner!
I've tried dozens of disk i/o chunk and quantity settings. Some only gave me an extra 5 to 10 secs. before the frames start inserting again.
I don't have a clue where to go from here!! The Intensity Pro card doesn't allow me to capture less than 1080i, otherwise I would have tried that. What drives me crazy is that I've had everything set up where my CPU is only running 40 to 50% and Vdub still inserts frames at approx 1min20sec.!!!
Help!!

I forgot to mention:
I've disabled Overlay, Filter Chain and Audio capture...still doesn't help!

I've just got the blackmagic intensity shuttle a few days ago. I'm very happy with the device & its quality I've configured the timing settings this way:
I'm not sure if these are the correct settings for devices like the BM and also Some DV capture devices like the canopus ADVC 110. But it seems I run fine with these settings (no dropped frames and the like).
Under Video/Capture filter you should be able to set the format/resolution you need. The signal format you feed into the BM must be the same you set in the capture filter dialogue. |

Thanks for the advice Bugs, I did try to set up the timing settings as you described. Unfortunately, the problem remains. I went a step further yesterday and tested my memory with Windows Memory Diagnostic tools. The memory checked out fine. I'm still wondering if it might be a problem or short coming that's hardware related.
I will tell you this - I am able to capture uncompressed with no problem using Blackmagic Media Express. I let it capture for about 7 minutes before I stopped it....no dropped frames through that software. But when I try to capture uncompressed through vdub...frames start inserting again, at about 1 min, 20 sec....crazy!! That's why I think it must be a Virtualdub issue.
I'd really like to use vdub, because it offers me several lossless codecs that I don't have available in Premiere Pro and Media Express. In those programs I only have uncompressed (HDD hog!) and Mjpeg (CPU hog!). I really like the AMV2MT codec (only available to me in vdub). It has several lossless settings. I think it's a great compromise.

So far I am only capturing PAL video with my intensity shuttle. I do use the lagarith codec in YUY2 mode: http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=3&t=19726 It offers a better compression than huffyuv and is only a little bit slower than huffyuv. So far I had absolutely no problems with dropped/inserted frames. FX1Dude, did you try capturing in another resolution than 1080i? Maybe you can do more tests with different resolutions eg. an analog source and see if you run into the same problems there.
Also you could try checking your setup (hard-/software) with the latency checker: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml The max latency on my setup is around 20 micro sec. |
