Hi!

I've been trying to Capture on a PC from a VHS VCR and at the same time Compress the Video so I can later Convert it to VCD.

I tried to use the DivX 5.0 and 3.11 Alpha Codecs (Low Motion) but I choose it and it keeps capturing big size (like 3MB per min.).

I even formatted my PC and re-installed everything but nothing happens!!!

Can somebody tell me how to do it right?

This is what I do:

1- I open Virtual Dub.
2- I go to Video/Compression/and Choose the Low Motion Codec.
3-I go to File/Capture AVI/Video/Compression and Choose the same Codec. (I choose it also on Compression Compatibility from the same Video Menu).
4- I play the VHS tape and start Capturing (Capture/Capture Video).

I don't change anything else I'm kinda new at this.

A few months ago, I captured from a CamCorder using the same Hardware and Software but I don't recall how I did it.

My OS is WindowsME.

What am I doing wrong???

Thanks in advance!!!

PS I also have Harry's Problem with DivX 5.0 Codec:

I dont see what the problem is?? 3meg for 1 minute is ok...thats pretty small size really...60mins would be 180meg? Full VCD (352x288@25fps you get about 1 hour per CD or 60mins = 700meg...) divx would be a bit better but still not 180meg for an hour...

What size are you capturing at?? Does it look ok?? Be happy with it if it is working...

What you are doing wrong is in the line just above your last question. Using WindowsMe for video capturing/procesing is not a good idea. for capturing I will recomend W98SE and for procesing Win XP, but that is not the reason that causes your problem.

if you want to reduce the sice of the capture here is the solution: reduce the bitrate, I think when capturing with 5.0.2 doesn't really use the bitrate that you set. use 3.11 IF you what to capture straight to divx or use Xvid (anyway capturing to divx/xivd is not the best solution, but its fast a efficent) remember to give at least 0.200 bits/pixel in the bitrate (If it was done with two pass encoding you could go as low as 0.17, but not when capturing) so calculate a good bitrate:
example:
384x288x25x0.2=552960 so you should set like 560Kbps at least.
H x W x fpsx bits/pixel.

that gives you 560000/8 Bytes/s *60=4 Mb/min
and then is the sound, captured in PCM and then compressed.

That is bigger than what you are getting so or your resolution is smaller and /or lower framerate or you should actually raire the bitrate and the size of your files.

as for the steps:

1- Open Virtual Dub.
2-Go to File/Capture AVI/Video/Compression and Choose the same Codec. (
3- I play the VHS tape and start Capturing (Capture/Capture Video).

The other places you set the codec are unnecessary the step 2 is not used in capture and the Compression Compatibility is used only if you use that kind of capture.

But if you capture straight to divx/Xivd you should apply filters on the fly in capture time at least to clean the image (will compress beter and you can't do that latter without compressing again (bad idea)).
