Okay. I'm trying to record gameplay from my XBOX 360 console using a Hauppauge HVR-1600 which came with my HP Media Center PC. The program Hauppauge recommends with it's card is called WinTV, which works but unfortunately adds a 2-3 second delay to the feed, which understandably would make playing a game difficult. I was told that VirtualDub is a good program for recording video from all sorts of sources.
However, I can't get VirtualDub to pick up a video feed from the 360. I know that all the physical connections are secure, the XBOX is on, all the obvious stuff. I know the setup works because it works in WinTV (albeit with that 2-3 second lag). From doing some searches on these forums, I believe the problem has something to do with the hardware of the card forcing it to process the video in some format that VirtualDub does not support (mpeg2 or something like that). However, I'm not sure, and I have absolutely no knowledge on all this moonspeak like codecs, encoding, etc.
Can someone explain in layman's terms what my problem is, whether I can fix it, and if I can't possible alternative programs that may work with my card? Hauppauge has no support forums that I could find and their tech support is M-F, so I can't reach them at the moment.
Thanks in advance. |

Once you've selected the device in VirtualDub, go to Video > Capture Filter. That brings up the main dialog for the capture driver and it's usually the one that lets you switch from MPEG-2 to a different format. |

Is this the menu you are talking about?

Selecting any of the options in that menu produce no results. |

Hmm, you may be stuck. VirtualDub doesn't support recording MPEG-1 or -2; it needs to be set to something that's AVI compatible, like MPEG-4, DivX, or MJPEG. If there isn't anything like that in other tabs you may be stuck. |

Sorry, I know this is an old thread, but for anyone that is still having this issue, there is a setting in WinTV 7 specifically for gaming that removes the delay. Under "Advanced Options" in the WinTV configuration, check the option labelled "Use Game mode for analog..". You will have to reboot for this to take effect. The delay is put in place to allow for pausing of live TV. |
