- if you ask : Can I "open" MP4 with VirtualDub ...
Yes you can, when you install the QuickTime-plugin for VirtualDub
http://home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/index.html (actually this site is not available)

- if you ask : Can I "save" to MP4 with VirtualDub ...
Yes you can, when you do use external encoders:

You need appropriate VfW codec - for MPEG-4 AVC install ffdshow VfW.
Go to ffdshow video encoder configuration and set (in decoder) tab support for H.264/AVC.
Or You can try x264vfw.

Thanks malky and Placio74 for the extra information.
Myself I was not aware of the fact that the QuickTime plugin seems to work like a splitter and that it needs extra decoders for video and audio...

Decoders for the video:

- ffdshow: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/

- x264vfw: http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/

Decoder for the audio:

- aac acm: http://www.videoaudio.pl/infusions/pro_dow...oad.php?did=341

N.B.: fccHandler's homepage (VirtualDub plug-ins and acm codecs) is still not available:

Dear pam, did you read my answer (here above) completely ?

You say you installed ffdshow and x264vfw, but probably not the aac acm !

The first two are "video" decoders, the last one (the acm) is an "audio" decoder.

Take care to install the xx-bit version (32 or 64) of the acm that corresponds to the xx-bit version of VirtualDub that you have installed.

Thanks for the reply. Yes have also aac acm (32)

Both ffdshow and x264vfw were downloaded to my c:/program while aac acm (32) were extracted to Vdub/plugins.

Did I do the right thing?

It does not matter where You downloaded - just install.

This is not a plugin. Again, it does not matter where You extract downloaded archive - just install. However, in this case by old-fashioned way - click right mouse button on .inf file and choose Install option from context menu. Or (especially if you have a 64-bit system) run "Install the 32-bit codec.bat" file
