I am a novice, so please be patient.
Using screen capture, I created a avi file and I also have a separate wav file explaining the screen capture activities. .
The original file sizes are avi=340 KB and wav=864 KB.
I compressed the avi file using VD with Divx Codec and I compressed the wav file with mp3 format. The file sizes are now avi=86 KB and wav=118 KB.
When I tried to dub the avi file using VD, by opening the avi and wav files and do a Save As. The dubbed file size is 1,652 KB.
Is there a way to reduced the size to close to 200 KB? Also, why is the dubbed file size so much larger than the sum of the original files.
Thanks.

You certainly forgot to set 'video' to 'direct stream copy' when using 'save as', now your video is uncompressed YUV data ( huge ) ...
