Hi there, I have an old tvcard (Askey TView99) which works with Virtual Dub and allows me to capture avi files.

Is there any way that Virtual Dub can save to Mpeg1 format instead of avi? My hard drive isn't that huge and I would like to be able to burn directly to VCD PAL without to much trouble.

1. You cant use Virtualdub for MPEG1/2. Vdub is targeted to AVI container, and AVI cant hold MPEG1/2 AFAIK ( maybe there are hacks, dont know ).
In any case, even if you could use MPEG1 with AVI you could never make a VCD out of that, a VCDs are .mpeg streams ...

2. You needed a very powerful CPU for real time compression, and as this is no 2 pass encoding but only 1 pass ( CBR or CQ ) the quality would be worse than with capturing to HuffYuff ( you use HuffYuff i hope ? ) and reencoding later

My recommendations :

- capture with Vdub, use HuffYuff lossless YUV codec for video and save audio as PCM

- buy a bigger HDD

- reencode the captured AVI in TMPEG to a VCD/SVCD later, using 2 pass recording

- best way : move to Europe, buy a DVB-S sat card and record the MPEG2 streams directly from the satellite, like i do smile.gif ...

Support matroska as container and Gstreamer as the only truely open, x-platform multimedia platform ....

You can also use a MJPEG Codec like the PicVideo Codec instead of Huffyuv for capturing. Pic Video MJPEG @quality 19 gives you a good result and much smaller files, not as good as huffyuv, but worth a try

VCD only supports CBR anyway so using 2-pass is useless here. If you want to capture directly to (S)VCD you may try PowerVCR from Cyberlink but this program isn't availible for free. You also need a WDM-based driver.

Hi there thanks for the tips!

The spec of my pc is: 1.8ghz Athlon cpu, 512 DDR ram, 40Gb HDD (7,200rpm).

When I use Virtual Dub, I am currently using the Microsoft V2 codec to record avi files (Format is YUY2) at 384x288, the audio is recorded as PCM.

I do drop frames when I am recording is that usual?? around 26 for 1 hours footage. Should I stop programs in the background such as my anti-virus program?

I've also tried third party apps like WinVCR and PowerVCR but they all require WDM drivers and they don't appear to work to well on my tvcard.

Lastly what is the best codec to use to record with, I've only tried Huffy and Microsoft V2(?), the latter makes the avi files smaller.

Thanks again guys!!

Use Huffyuw for capture (or MJPEg if filesize matters) in high resulution (FullPal)
Use VDub synch
deactivate all others programs during capture
