During encoding a blank grey VDub window? If yes, this could be because of disabling show video input / output in the options or status window, dont panic but look at the movie when its finished

actually.. nope... i know what the grey means.. but even when i enable it is only black.. now that i've got the file done.. i tried opening it.. but it is all black frame.
when i open name1.avi in virtualdub... it shows as all black frames..
and so is name2.avi... i can hear the sound ok for it though...
hmm.. how about if i use 1 pass? any disadvantages to it?
(p.s. whats the "Install Handler" option for?)

It is normal that you dont see anything after the encoding of the first pass.
Are you sure, that you 1. set from "2 pass, first pass" to "2 pass, second pass" after the first encoding ? 2. Did not load the mpeg file again (manually by file open...) after finished the first pass, think it should be no problem, but who knows ?
Dont know, what else could be wrong, do you see a picture, when playing other Divx Movies ?
I printed my "guide", did everything EXACTLY as I wrote it and had no problems, I know that this doesnt help you, but it shows, that the guide is ok.
Try the operation with a short part of the movie (cutting before encoding) this will take not so much time as encoding the whole movie does and look at the result
Install handler is only important for frameserving from VirtualDub to another program (like TMPEG) You dont need it here.
EDIT: Please press "yes" in every "error message box" that says, that video filters do not take effect... when you compress the audio, but this should not help you here cause your problem is one step before that.

eh.. so u do not need to open the 1st pass file when doing the 2nd pass?
hmm... does that mean that both my first and 2nd pass have to save in the same folder?
anyway i can reuse my 1st pass file again? or do i have to do it all over again

that's not absolutely necessary but better get used to

yupp, as long as you won't change any settings (e.g. bitrate, resolution, apply the same filters as for 1st pass etc.)
I don't get it, sorry dude... BaronVlad described a really good 'how 2' and all you did was steeling his time instead of reading and comprehend it
| QUOTE | 1. Load the Video in VirtualDub (File open...) 2. Set Audio Direct StreamCopy 3. Set Video Full Processing Mode 4. Apply Filters if you need (you can also try without at first) 5. Set Video Compression Divx 5.02 (for example) 6. Fill in the calculated Bitrate (should be about 996 for a 85 minutes movie with sound @128kb mp3) 7. Set the other codec things if you like to 8. in the codec menu set "2pass first pass" 9. File save as avi "name1" Then wait a bit (~one hour or so, depends on your hardware and filters etc..) 10. Set Video Compression Divx5.02 "2pass second pass" 11. File save as avi "name2" wait for the second pass 12. File Open "name2" in VirtualDub 13. Set Audio Full Processing Mode 14. Set Video Direct stream Copy 15. Set Audio Compression MPEGLayer 3 128kb 16. File save as avi "final"

Hi guys!
Can anybody explayn me, why to copy sound and video back and forth: copy sound TWICE directly (especially during first pass?), create during second pass a videofile with directly copied sound and then directly copy video and recode sound to third file?
Looks like waste of time and HDD space. During such a procedure you will have three avi files - original, second pass result and final (I don't take into account avi from first pass, it's small).
All can be done during two passes: 1. First pass is necessary ONLY to create logfile - so "no audio". 2. Second pass does all actual work - so full processing with necessary compression for audio, "2 pass - 2nd pass" for video.
As a result there are only original and recoded avi files, no unnecessary direct copiyng of sound and video back and forth.
Regards, Valja |

You are right valma, it works now, but in the past I tried it already and VDub crashed very often (or always) when doing audio and video compression at the same time, dont know why, but with the copying back and forth it ALWAYS worked for me. Thats why.
But when it works without problems now, it is of course the better way

No, Foxhound, I am sure you wont, please try your operation in my (or maybe valjas) way again. It HAS TO work.

lol.. did it all over again... without opening name1.avi.. and it worked... thanks Baron..
well.. kinda accidentaly opened name1.avi to convert cos in normal progs, it is convert once then use 1st round conversion for a 2nd round.. guess its different here.. hmm.. i wonder how name1.avi is utilised in this case.... hehe |

There is a minor part of the Baron's "how2" the puzzles me a bit: Why sit and wait for 1st part to finish and then do the 2nd one? I do things more or less the way the "how2" describes, only I tick the "Add operation to job list and defer processing" when saving the AVI for both passes. (In fact, every now and then I do this for several movies.) Then finally I go to "Job control" and start all jobs.
This saves me some waiting time (makes my wife happy as she prefers to have me in bed right next to her at night in stead of in front of the 'puter:-) |

As I see the probs that occured when using this "guide" (i think it is not really a guide, isnt it ), i am happy that i told nothing about joblists (sylia.dll not found, breakdown after first pass...).
But you are right with the joblist, sokristi, I normally use them because of the reasons you told us, ok, as you desired here it is, but (the same as it is evrey time !) Please be sure to do EXACTLY what is told you (I built in valja ideas also):
1. Load the Video in VirtualDub (File open...) 2. Set Audio No Audio 3. File save as avi "name1" (dont forget to activate "add to joblist" in your save as window!!!) 10. Set Video Compression Divx5.02 "2pass second pass" 11. Set Audio "avi audio" 12. Set Audio Full Processing Mode 13. Set Audio Compression MPEGLayer 3 128kb 14. File save as avi "final" (dont forget to activate "add to joblist" in your save as window!!!) 15. Set File -> Job Control and press "Start" VDub now automatically does the first pass and in the second job the second pass and the audio. "Final.avi" is you final file, as the name should already mean.
Please be sure to have a (not writeprotected!!!) sylia.dll in the same directory as VDub is. This should be ok, if you downloaded VDub right from the net, but is not, if you are running it from a CD, or just copied it from a CD to Harddisk. If it is protected just disable write protection !
I tried it with using EXACTLY this poor "guide". Works ! If it does not please read again. Thanks
