Hey guys,

I was wondering if there's a way to change the Image Sequence destination folder to just automatically select the source file directory for output. For example, in Handbrake's GUI you can specify {source_path} rather than specify c:\files\ or whatever. I've found that if I use .\ then it will output to the Virtualdub Program Files folder, but that's it so far.

On a similar note, I have two instances of Virtualdub in two separate directories, but both of them seem to share the destination folder for an Image Sequence. If I open Virtualdub1 up and change the folder to c:\files\temp\ then when I open Virtualdub2 the folder path is now c:\files\temp\ as well. I assumed this was some sort of registry setting since it's shared between the two, but I can't find it's location. If there's a way to keep separate settings in Virtualdub1 and 2 then please let me know. Thanks so much.

The Windows Registry Setting you are looking for is this:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VirtualDub.org\VirtualDub\Persistence]
"Image sequence: directory"="C:\\xxxxxxxxx"

Yep, that's it! Doesn't appear there's any way to set different directory for different instances of Virtualdub however. Thanks though, I appreciate it.

The only way I see, is to run VirtualDub on two different computers. So, let's say two or more virtual pc's.
But, do not ask me how, because I have no experience at all, how to run that.

Besides that, I do not immediatly see the real reason why you need to run two or more instances of VirtualDub at the same time.

And, if the problem is not in running two or more instances of VirtualDub at the same time, but just to have possibility to save different settings, then why not create two or more *.REG files with the specific settings that you prefer for each of these instances.

The reason for running two different version is to run different decoders. FFInputDriver.vdplugin can be very useful, but has a bunch of issues like frame accuracy, so I tend to only use it as a last resort. I used to just enable/disable it when I needed it, but I thought it might be easier to have two versions of Virtualdub, one of which uses FFInputDriver. Two .reg files is a good idea, but not much different than what I was doing before. Interesting suggestion for a way to deal with multiple profiles though.

I'm not sure I totally understand. There are two options Program Directory and User Profile. Both Virtualdubs are in separate directories and are set to Program Directory. I don't see an option to actually choose a specific directory if that's what you mean. I'm on 1.10.4 if that helps.

Reading the information in the Startup options, it says that the selected location will be used for configuration files, job queue and auto-recover files.
So, at my opinion, this will not help you to a solution
1) for storing image sequences in two different locations, nor
2) for influencing the behaviour to use different decoders.

The "Program directory" is the one where VirtualDub.exe is stored.
The "User profile" is where your personal settings are stored (C:\users\...).

1) Every time you go to File > Export > Image sequence, the "Directory to hold images:" seems to be retrieved from the Windows Registry and is also immediatly stored when you change it.
So, even when two (or more) instances of VirtualDub are open, they will always use the same folder (to hold the images).
Myself, I'am afraid there is nothing much to do to this...
2) To make that VirtualDub uses different decoders, you should focus to the plugins that you are using.
You can choose to install/remove plugins, so that VirtualDub uses by default the one that you prefer, or
you can select the desired plugin when in the File > "Open video file"-dialogbox, at "Files of type", before clicking to open the videofile.

Just checked your correct I expected to see a Config.ini file in the Virtualdub folder there isn't one. Virtualdub seems to save everything still to registry this maybe a bug. Although it doesn't save to user profile settings directory also for portable Virtualdub would better served not to save anything to the registry

Virtualdub is not portable or portable as you would expect for portable software

This setting Virtualdub - Options - Preferences - Startup - Program Directory should take care of it in each Virtualdub instance/s where set, I would have thought

This appears to be a discussion about it from July of 2010:

This thread reminds me that I haven't run the actual Virtualdub installer in ages, I've just replaced files and plugins as they've come available. I've been migrating files and plugins since Windows XP, and only did a full install on this Windows 7 PC when I built it, so I wonder if there are registry values missing or incorrect. Probably time to do a fresh install smile.gif

May I add some more information...

VirtualDub has NO installer (no setup.exe, no install.exe).
You simply unzip the files included in "VirtualDub-1.10.5-test6.zip" to a folder in (at preference) C:\Program files\...
You can start the program by double clicking VirtualDub.exe, and if you like you can create a shortcut to it.

VirtualDub creates its registry settings from the moment that you first start it, and later when you are using it and you are changing parameters.

A number of settings, like the selection of a video- and audio-encoder, the settings for these encoders, the selection of filters (like Resize for example), and so on..., can be stored in a configuration file *.vcf (via File > Save processing settings). In this manner you can save multiple different setting-files and load the one you prefer, after starting VirtualDub (via File > Load processing settings).
You can even add the path+name of a settings-file in a shortcut to start VirtualDub with these settings (and so create different shortcuts for every configuration).

Filters and inputdriver plugins are also available as zipped (compressed) files and must be unzipped into - respectively - the plugins and plugins32 subfolders of the VirtualDub installation folder.

I hope this will be more clear to you.

Regards.

Right. By installer what I mean I suppose was the dialogue from auxsetup.exe that launches the first time you run it. I could be wrong, but if you download a new version and copy it into your Program Files directory I don't think that dialogue opens. But it's been a while, so I may be just forgetting.
