Hello together,

i need to digitize all the video material from my vathers super8 camcorder (nearly 30 years old now), to make him happy, seeing all the Videos again on his Laptop.
There are approximately 30 Tapes with 90 minutes each here, that need to be digitized.. So lots of work / time.

I have used the search, but i couldn't find something relevant for me.

The hardware i'm willing to use for that is:

Windows 7 Ultimate
Pentium D with 2,8 Ghz
4 GB Ram (but only 3GB can be used.. because its a 32bit system)
Haupauge WinTV HVR-1100 (Dvb-t TV card with Composite and Line IN)
VirtualDub-1.10.4
Sony Super8 Camcorder with Composite OUT and Mono Sound OUT

Each capture process will take minimum 60 Minutes, and maximum 90 minutes, depending of the length of the tape.

Wiring:

I have connected the composite OUT of the camcorder with the Composite IN of the TV card with a chinch cable.
Due to the fact, that the camcorder only offers one chinchplug (MONO) for Sound, i bought a Y chinch converter and connected it to the camcorder.
From this Y chinch converter, a chinch to 3,5mm headphonejack goes to the TV cards line IN plug.

So far so good.

VirtualDub is finding the Capture device, and after setting the right sound input, it records the sound correct aswell.

AND NOW THE PROBLEM(s):

At first, i just started recording - and all looked fine (recorded for a couple of minutes, checked the video file, and i was satisfied).
Then i let it record for the complete time of the tape length.

Something strange happend: After the file reached a certain size - it started again from 0 Bytes and begain again to Record. (Hardrives are both formated in NTFS)
The Video File that came out in the end, was unusable. The beginning of the Video seemed to be fine, but when fast forwarding to the first 3rd of the Video, the PC took ages to open the Video at this point, and when it did, the picture was still and not at the same position as the sound.

So i started playing arround with some settings.
I activated compression, and in Timing i set "Sync Video to audi by adjusting video timing" (because somebody on youtube said, this is good).

This helped me with the file size (90 Minutes 1,5 GB), but i still have the problem when changing to another area of the video in playback, that it takes ages and the soundproblem appears.
The picture stutters too wile playback then. But not in the beginning! Then, everything is fine. In the middle of recording it seems to start happening.

Can you please give me an advice, what i'm doing wrong, or better,
what would be the best config to record 90 minutes with sound in virtualdub?
should i try a differnt codec? which would be the best?

An easy tutorial would be great smile.gif

Thanks in advance from Germany, and please excuse my bad english :/

The best thing you can do, is taking care that video and audio are compressed while capturing/recording.

If not, you finally will get very huge file sizes. Windows will mostly limit a file to 2 or 4 GB, and so, VirtualDub will start a new one.
That large files make that, when playing the recorded video via VirtualDub, the images and sound will begin to stutter or hang.

You will find a "Compression..." entry in the Video- and in the Audio- menu when in Capture mode in VirtualDub.
So, make sure to set a compression codec for both, video AND audio.
For video, you can use for example x264vfw or xvid, for audio you can use the Lame MP3 codec.
> https://www.xvid.com/download/

Also a thing to take care of, is to set a maximum key frame interval of (at preference) 25 images or less.
Mostly, you can set this via the encoder settings.

And, maybe the following threads can also be of interest to you, to read:
