VirtualDubs 'capture mode' is not really made for only recording audio, but if you like to record your voice while capturing your screen, this is possible.

You can either use the built-in microphone of a portable pc (mostly with webcam), or you can use an external microphone that you branch to your pc.

The only thing that you must verify (before capturing voice will be possible), is that the concerning audio input is active.

In Windows 7 you can do this by right clicking the speaker-icon in the windows taskbar and clicking "Recording devices".
In the Sound-dialogbox and the "Recording"-tab that now is being shown, you can make that either "External mic" or "Integrated Microphone Array" are enabled.
You can do this by right-clicking the concerning device and clicking 'Enable'. By double-clicking (after you have Enabled), you can change the volume "Level".
If the microphones should not be visible or shown, then, when right-clicking on the visible device, you should check "Show Disabled Devices".

When you now go into the capture mode of VirtualDub (via File > Capture AVI...) you can select your microphone via the Audio-menu, by checking the concerning device at the bottom of that menu.

As an alternative, you can use Audacity.
