From what I've experienced, Macrovision detection seems to be implemented directly in the chip hardware of some cards. You can experiment with all the drivers you want, but if the chip itself is rigged then you'll never be able to work around it through software.
As you noticed, even when the video tape isn't guarded by Macrovision, these chips are so sensitive that they will totally screw up your VHS captures. I have this problem with my ATI All-In-Wonder 9600.
I once purchased a "black box" Macrovision remover from SIMA. It worked well for a few things, but for some reason it doesn't help at all with the AIW 9600. Therefore I can no longer recommend their boxes.
I finally found my solution in the "ATI TV Wonder VE", which is based on a generic BT878A chip. If you can find one, they retail for around $30 to $50. I can't say enough good things about this card. It totally ignores Macrovision (whether it's actually present or not). My most trashed VHS tapes come through perfectly now.
