O.K you know when you go to open a file from say windows media player, there is a down arrow that lets you select files you have previously opened, how can I delete those file names that show up.

Windows Media Player? Run regedit, then goto
HKCU/Software/Microsoft/MediaPlayer/Player/RecentFileList
and delete the record(s) you hate so much...

The resent files arent the right ones. Click on file then open. Then you can type in the filename: or use that down arrow for a big list of stuff. That list is what I want to delete. blink.gif Hope you understand? huh.gif

No, i don't... File -> Open usually (at least, in my case wink.gif ) results in the standard FileOpenDialog (like those in most Windows-applications) where one can navigate and select the files stored in your HDD or removable media, does not it? you do not want to see these files... so, what do you want, actually?

1. to erase these files from the storage media (sounds absolutely stupid!) or
2. to make these files invisible for WMP (seems stupid too: how to open files? drug-n-drop only? why?) or
3. to make FileOpenDialog impossible to call from WMP (see the reason No.2) or...?

None the less important question is why do you want? i'd like to know at least one reason - may be, it would so attractive that i'll want to do the same rolleyes.gif .

@NuPogodi:

On my system (Windows XP Pro) the standard File Open dialog does have a down arrow next to the "File name:" field, and clicking on the arrow brings up a huge list of recently opened filenames. I think this list is what he wants to erase.

Offhand I don't know how to do it either... unsure.gif

aaaah! that is he was talking about! that list is automaticaly generated by WMP from the all media files (WAV, MP3, AVI, MPG, etc) stored in registry (somewhere in HKEY_USERS)... how to remove: run regedit, then press CTRL-F, insert the full path-filename: say, c:/tmp/porno/hard_porno/very_hard_porno.mpg smile.gif
and, when regedit will find it for you, just delete this record. voila!

well, vdub1.4.10 doesn't have it on open dialog box.
smile.gif
1.5.10 does.

btw. while we're here and talking about open dialog box, does anybody know a way to make open box default to "details" instead of "list"?

i find the left-right scroll harder to use if many files are in the folders. and i wanna see filesize on opening.

i would also like the win to memorize the size of that window (after i extend it to almost fill the desktop), but ...hehm...i doubt i'll get either of these two things.
(i searched for a solution before, but didn't really find anything)

but there...i asked.

In many versions of Windows Media Player:
Tools --> Options --> Privacy [a tab]
and uncheck "Save file and URL history in the Player".

You may also see an option to clear your history.

This option, though it may not permanently delete everything to the trained eye, will make invisible what you want to make invisible without editing anything in the registry (ideal for the faint of heart).

Hmmm, I don't think so. My list contains things like .bmp, .avs, and .vdr files which I've never opened with WMP...

That's what i told... It's not WMP, but Windows itself creates a log of recently used multimedia files and writes this info in the registry. That's why the WMP list contains some files which were never played in WMP, but were in other multimedia applications (WinAmp, MediaPlayerClassic, etc)

the fastest way how to remove unnecessary files is the following: find in registry (HKEY_USERS...Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/ComDlg32/OpenSaveMRU) wherein Windows stores these files, then rightclick on OpenSaveMRU and export this info as, say, RestoreMRU.reg. On necessity, you can edit this file in notepad or any other text editor... anytime when you will run this reg, the WMP list will be restored. in other words, you will no longer need to enter and edit your registry records...
