Hi. The general idea is this. Since ffvfw supports mpg2 encode/decode in an avi file could someone convert an mpg2 file to an avi without recompression just by inserting an appropriate avi header to the mpg2 stream? Or by copying the compressed mpg2 frames to the avi container? Then the file could be played back with ffvfw codecs. I suppose i'm not the first to think of this but is there a problem with that idea?

you want ffdshow postprocessing on mpeg2 files?
go to ffdshow->codecs and check "raw video".....

so ffdshow sits on top of mpeg2 decoder....

im not sure, in a way MPEG2 is already a container of its own so you would be putting a container in a container. then again, i believe you can mux mpeg2 into matroska (or at least thats planned to be done). if you suggest it to some avi-'hackers', theyll probably try to make it work (and succeed too i suppose). but i dont think just copy-pasting a avi-header to a mpeg2 file will work

i cant think of any particular use for it though... well, perhaps if you want mp3 with mpeg2 or something.

doesn't the ffvfw/ffdshow itself offer this possibility?
to encode mpeg2 to .avi,i mean....

but it beats me why would you wanna do this....
it's not like mpeg2 is THE codec to be had and you absolutely need it....

The MPEG standard allows MP3 audio with MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, and it's no problem to mux them with TMPGEnc. However, I don't think the DVD spec allows it, so many hardware and software DVD players may reject the stream.

stephanV, fccHandler:
The reson i need it is to edit mpeg2 with the free video editors bundled with those firewire cards. There are some stubborn video editors like ulead videostudio SE (spec. edition) and others that don't have mpeg2 support and that deny to use any form of frameserved content. I've tried serving with avisynth, dvd2avi (although that almost could be used with videostudio but it gave mci errors), vdub frameserver etc. to no avail. My capture card grabs at mpeg2 and it's a PITA to convert.

I see that there's a utility MPA2WAV that does the same "header transplant" but for audio files only (instant convertion of mp2/3 to wav) and i thought it could be possible with mpeg2 now that ffvfw can playback mpeg2.

i4004:
yes ffvfw can encode mpeg2 inside an avi but it's a tedious task and too slow not to mention the quality loss. I hope there was a way to add an appropriate avi header without reencoding.
