I've just finished successfully encoding a 6.5 minute wvga (848x480) video using the external encoder feature of vdub 1.10.0. I used lame 3.98.4, x264 build 1884 and mvktoolsnix 4.4.0.

This combination has squashed a file, potentially 6,000MB+ of uncompressed video and audio down to 22MB. Pretty darned good when we consider that the original MOV file (avc1 H264 encoded) was some 68MB.

The video is a static 'talking head' affair with no cuts, pans etc so It would lend itself to a lot of compression with little information loss but the results are still impressive. The difference between x264 and H264 is a little perplexing.

This external decoder feature is (so far) a great addition to Virtualdub.

x264 is the name of the encoder (that encode in H264 format).
The dimension of an H264 video may vary a lot, depending of the encoder and of the settings.

Thanks for the clarification. So I have a 6.5 minute video:-
MOV container H264 encoded by avc1 = 68MB.
MKV container H264 encoded by x264 = 22MB.
Either x264 is way better than avc1 or someone is really bad at setting parameters. rolleyes.gif
In case you are wondering, no I can't do anything about the MOV situation. The badness is hard coded into the nasty Kodak camera that I bought. So now thanks to you guys I have Vdub 1.10 set up to open these MOV files, I trim and edit and add sound as required and then use the external encoder option to do the job properly. Well, that's the plan anyway. smile.gif

I think you mean fourcc, not encoders.
Look here: http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=H.264
FOURCCs: AVC1, DAVC, H264, X264, VSSH
The fact tha there is a fourcc (x264) with the same name of a encoder doesn't mean that exist an encoder with the name avc1.

If you use MediaInfo, what you see as "Format" isn't the encoder but you can see encoder name under "Writing library" (if present).

Anyway it isn't the fourcc that matters, also using a different version of the same encoder can give different results and also I don't think that an encoder in a "camera" can be so advanced as a one on the pc.
