I just received my dual layer dvds and I never have seen such a low max speed like 2.4X I've seen 8's before.

What happens if I burn at a higher max speed?

2.4X will be too slow and with today's dvd burners, they are expendable nowadays.

Normally the burning software won't let you exceed the maximum speed of the media, correct? I believe it's actually recorded on the media itself such that the drive can detect it.

My guess is that if you somehow do manage to exceed the max rate, you will either increase the chances of a coaster or at least of a marginal burn -- harder to read on some devices, burner has to change speeds mid-recording, etc....

Looks like your right about that.

It took 40 minutes to burn a disk which is better than the estimated 50 to 60 minutes that I saw stated at a wiki. Maybe the firmware is a little faster so it can burn -10 minutes?

I guess with a slower speed, I won't have to worry about underuns, lol.
