Once in a while I would use avidemux but then would leave it because of problems. This time around I was curious to see if it would open my flip videos and it does without much gripe but whatever I seem to do in the editor, it crashes, and when it does it does so hard.

I'm not trying to bash that program and from what I have seen from it, it looks capable of what it is suppose to do. Whether it's saving a video or even saving a project, bang! It comes crashing down.

My goal was to use something quick like avidemux to save out to an intermediate file then use that file in Vdub.

I am still in pursuit of the Vdub MP4 plugin because from what mediainfo is telling me, I don't appear to have a quicktime video, it's sony mp4, and I'm curious to see if the MP4 plugin could open this file, though from what I read from a recent poster the link to that plugin has been dead for a while?

Have you installed haali media splitter ?
http://haali.su/mkv/

You should be able to open your flip videos with that, using the directshow plugin
If you still can't, check ffdshow's vwf config program and turn on h264, or download divx8

Something funny happened: I had h264 enabled in the VFW encoder section of FFDshow but I had an idea to disable libavcodec from there, apply, close out, reopen FFDshow, reapply libavcodec for FFDshow and guess what? I can now import these mp4's through the Vdub DS plugin.

I don't get it but as I have said a number times: I'm not going to question it.

In your opinion do you think Haali would do a better job of decoding or is Haali and FFDshow pretty much the same?

Haali's a splitter, not a codec

Splitters are the bits that seperate the file into it's bits
eg the microsoft avi splitter reads avi files and seperates them into the streams - audio, video etc
these are then passed on to the required decompressors

Haali's splitter lets you read mp4 files etc, but you've got something installed that reads it so, you're ok
If you still have trouble, it wouldn't hurt anything if you installed it

Ah ok. A splitter. I've seen some examples of those being used in something called graphedit some time ago? I remember moving around some of the blocks to make connections to pins of other blocks to reconstruct some example of getting a video to play.

If I remember correctly: After the splitter block you would then have to layout an audio block section then a video block section and those would get further processing blocks then the end block enabled you to run your video through a chosen decoder?

Yup - the splitter's usually the first one on the left in graphedit

If for example you drop a mp4 file into graphedit, you can right click on that first block and see which splitter is used in it's properties

Some splitters are better than others, halli's is a good one, and can split mp4, mkv, ogm and a few others

I installed the splitter but can't get MPC-HC to use it. I either lowered the merit or blocked the current renderer and use the "add filter" in the lower box for external filters but I don't notice Haali as the renderer.

I had to switch back to the other renderer for the time being. Guess it doesn't really matter which one is used so I'll stick with what I have now,

I use xmedia recode to convert my files to xvid mp3 compression and avoid doing all the mess with ffdshow, splitters, codec packs, and filters. I have mov h264 avhc mpc files which I hope one day vdub will support out of the box. Until then, xmedia recode to the rescue.

MPC's a non-standard thing
It's got it's own splitters and codecs built in, as well as rendering choices
The splitters and codecs are listed in the options->internal filters
On the left is splitters, on the right is codecs

eg if avi is ticked on the left, it reads avi's with it's own code, untick it and it reads with the microsoft (or other installed) splitter

If Halli splitter is being used, you can usually see it's icon in the system tray (thats for all apps, not just MPC)
