I have an avi file, played in Divx Player 5.02. Why is it that when I try to seek forward in the file that the audio defaults back to the beginning of the track, while the video does not, resulting in a lockup and consequently, an illegal operation?
Can this be corrected to allow fast forwarding through said files?
I must admit, I'm a bit lost amid this all.

Does it also happen in Windows Media Player? If so, take a look at this thread. If the file is below 2GB in size, you can fix it by loading it into VD, selecting "Direct Stream Copy" from both the "Video" and "Audio" menus and then saving the file using "Save old format AVI". |

The error also occurred in WMP, however. Upon using direct stream copy for both the audio and video, and selecting "Save old format AVI" from the file menu, I still receive the same problem.
I am unable to snap to a particular spot in the .avi and resume watching from that point. No matter what I try, the audio takes up from the beginning of the file and not the selected point. DivX Player then locks up on me, and shuts down due to an Illegal Operation.
Can VDub help?

If the audio is encoded as VBR (variable bitrate), then VirtualDub may not handle it correctly. You might want to try NanDub. |

Actually if the audio is VBR only broken players will play it and not always correctly. For best results the first thing anyone should do is convert AVI with VBR audio to CBR immediatly. VBR audio in AVI is guaronteed to screw you up. After all my time playing with it I have learned this for sure. |
