I Avery, hello everyone, I was not really sure where to ask this, perhaps it's newbie question.

I've been using VirtualDub for some years to embed subtitles on a given movie or TV show and put it on a USB pen to watch it in our TV.

The problem is that our TV only shows these videos with Xvid (dvd rip). With more videos turning up as 720 and HDTV, this is a problem as when I embed subtitles to them, and try on the TV, it doesn't recognize them.

Strangely, the TV works with those video formats if I don't embed subtitles.

So far only regular Xvid movies with embedded subtitles work.

Is there something obvious I'm missing, perhaps a plugin?

Hi JonasPT,

I suppose you are using the AVI-containerformat for your Xvid-encoded video's ?
I do not have experience with subtitling video's, but when the text is really embedded in the images/frames, this should not make a difference in comparison with non-subtitled video's.

The only thing I take care of to make sure that my DivX-encoded AVI's play correctly on my TV via a USB-stick, is to use the old AVI 1.0 format,
via File > Save old format AVI...

Maybe you can try that out ...

Are you using Xvid version 1.3.2, that you can find here:
http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html

and when using larger image-formats like 720p, do you select the profile "Xvid HD 720" when configuring the settings of the Xvid codec ?

Hi Abrazo, I'm encoding right now a File > Save old format AVI and try plugging it on the TV with the pen to check if it works (I'm encoding a 720/HDTV video).

I think I have Xvid and all codecs up do date.

I don't howevers understand, when you wrote the profile "Xvid HD 720". Where can I select or configure that?

I'm really a bit loss here, all regular (lower quality) Xvid videos work on my TV, but not when I encode 720 or higher with subtitles embedded.

I'll report back if the File > Save old format AVI worked though.

In VirtualDub, via the Video-menu, click onto Compression...
Select the Xvid MPEG-4 Codec, and click on the "Configure"-button
At Profile @ Level: , you should be able to select "Xvid HD 720" and click OK.

Via the About-button you can verify the version of the Xvid that you have installed.
At my knowledge, the latest version is 1.3.2 from May 30, 2011.

Just did a test with that Xvid-codec, converted an MP4-video, 1280x720p, to an AVI with Xvid-videocodec, and MP3-audiocodec.
Put it on a USB-memorystick, plugged in into my Philips LCD-television... no problem at all. Plays correctly.

Abrazo, I'll try that and report back.

Do you think a HDTV.x264 video would work the same way as a 720 or would I need to configure different settings?

And yes, I have the 2011 latest version of Xvid.

Yep, thought so about the x264 not working (I downloaded a x264 to use in Configurations but doesn't seem to work).

Abouyt the Xvid 720, it works on my TV, but it truncated the movie to 90 or so minutes when it was longer (The Hobbit), even though it was a 3GB file.

Maybe the truncation of the movie is a result of file size limitation. Verify the file size of the resulting AVI.

The reason why x264 is not playing is probably due to the video-containerformat.
When x264 is used in MP4 containerformat, it does play (in either case on 'my' television).
When it is used in AVI containerformat it does NOT play.

Via the internet you can find a lot of free videoconverters to convert video to MP4.
Maybe you try one of these (like for exemple Freemake Video Converter on http://www.freemake.com).

N.B.: Via VirtualDub you can create MP4-format by using external encoders and muxers, but that is little bit complicated.

Does that mean that if I convert a x264 video into .mp4 it would work with my TV?

I have Adobe Premiere by the way.

I'd embedd the subtitles with Virtualdub, save as AVI, and then convert it to .mp4?

Your chances that it will work with MP4 are really high.
Audio in this containerformat is mostly AAC instead of MP3, but AAC should also work on 'your' tv (on 'my' tv it does).

Just give a try.

Regards.

Cool, I'll try with .mp4 and AAC.

By the way, 720 or HDTV videos (as along as it's Xvid) work fine when I set the proper "Configure option". The truncated thing that happened with the last video was probably an error on my part. I since embedded the subtitle and encoded it again and works fine on one of the TVs (I have yet to try on the other one but looks solid that it will).
