I finally figured out how to use a filter, and I liked the preview. I checked it, highlighted it, and clicked OK. But the original video had not changed. For good measure I then went to "File", and "Saved" it - still, nothing happened.
I'm obviously missing a step. How can I save the new, filtered, video?

In VirtualDub you have two panels or panes: - the one at the left (Input video pane) shows you the original video - the one at the right (Output video pane) shows you a preview of what the video will be after filters have been applied and before compression takes place - if you check/activate "Display decompressed output" in the View-menu then you will see - during the compression - what the final result will be.
To show you the preview in real-time, you have to click the thirth button in the position control bar at the bottom of the VirtualDub window, i.e. the button with the triangle and the "O" of Output.
When you finally File > Save as AVI... you have to write the result to a new file, you can not immediately replace the original video with the resulting video.
By the way, which filter did you try, and which settings did you choose. Maybe we can help you further with a little bit more explanation. |
