You can dump the sound track out direct with the menu entry "export->raw audio", or save as a wav file with the menu entry "save wav"

THANKS for the advice, Im a bit surprised I would have thought that .... save wav... would have saved the whole video !
but it just saved the audio in wav format 1 hr 45 mins came out as a huge ............. 1 gig file !!!
Managed to convert to mp3 and get it down to a 95 meg file which for 1.hr .45 min audio is still on the big side.
It should really be somewhere around 20 meg but I cant figure how to shrink it to that ! |

the export->audio will just save the audio that is in the video if it's an mp3 in there you'll get an mp3 file, if it's an ac3 file, you'll get an ac3 file
save wav, saves the audio as a wav file, using whatever compression you picked from the audio compressor menu entry - if you don't pick a compressor, you'll get pcm (uncompressed audio)

Like dloneranger said, when your videofile is open in VirtualDub and you select an audio-codec via the Audio-menu > Compression... + you set Audio-menu to "Full processing mode..." you will get a compressed audio-file (via File > Save WAV...).
The compression factor will depend on the 'quality' that you select when setting the audio-codec.
For MP3 - to have CD-like quality - you should select 128Kbit/sec, 44.100Hz, Stereo. This will result in 16Kbyte/sec or about 940Kbyte/min. So, for 1:45h or 105 minutes you come to about 98MB (similar to the result you actually got).
To achieve a smaller filesize you will have to lower the quality, by choosing a smaller bitrate in the MP3 audio-codec settings.
N.B.: to have possibility to compress to MP3 via VirtualDub, the concerning codec must be installed. If not, then you can choose to download and install one or both of following MP3-codecs: > LAME (use download link in dloneranger's signature) > Fraunhofer MPeg Layer-3 (http://www.looprecorder.de/tut_l3codec.php) |
