Here is what I do: Open a video I take my 44.1kHz 16bit stereo wav that corresponds to the video and put it as the file to mux with in the audio menu I turn on Full processing mode for audio I set the conversion I want. (same thing with no changes in the conversion menu) And now, since I don't really want to mux it all, but only to convert the audio, I chose Save wav... and get the following error: "The requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format."
If I do the same but pick an mp3 instead of wav as input, it works w/o problems.
Is it a bug or a feature? |

Umm... The bug is not with VirtualDub, but with you.
If you made "no changes in the conversion menu," then the step-by-step procedure you described produces an exact replica of the original WAV. But at the same time you said that you "only want to convert the audio." What are you trying to convert it to? Please be more clear.

I added that to say that it doesn't matter what I try to convert to.
But anyway... I try to convert to an 8-bit, mono wav, with the same frequency, and using integral conversion and high quality... Doesn't matter what options I use, if I have a wav as input I get the error. If I have an mp3 as input, no errors. |

Well, I did everything you said but I am not able to reproduce your problem. Are you using the latest VirtualDub 1.4.13, and do you have the latest drivers for your sound card? If so, then I'm stumped. (sorry)

Yes, I am using vdub 1.4.13, but this problem have been around with previous versions that I can remember.
I'll look around to see if the problem can be elsewhere...
I wouldn't have bothered asking about this, if I didn't had the problem before. I don't usually convert audio this way either.

I was just wondering. Is wav PCM?

One possibility I can think of is that there is a bug in the error reporting in 1.4.13 (and probably earlier): in some cases, it says you have an audio compression error when you lack an audio decompression codec. However, this shouldn't be happening with PCM files. Check File | File Information and check if VirtualDub really does recognize the source as PCM. If it cannot find a codec to provide a name for the format, it will show a raw hex tag number.
The other possibility is that you have an audio compression format selected by mistake. |
