After I capture a movie the sound plays back a lot softer then the original, but my Mic is working like normal.
Any idea what this can be?
I'm using Windows Vista 32-bit and I'm recording my desktop itself |

The audio mixer for your sound device input will have controls to alter the level *for recording* as well as *for playback*.
Change the level for recording so it is just below 0db on the peak transients when viewing the audio level meter, then capture and it should be fine. |

That makes sense now to just find it in Vista....
EDIT: Which is like near impossible, apparently they took out the possiblity to change the recording settings in Vista.... |

My mic is working fine the problem is the rest of the sound and that doesnt change with that.
EDIT: I'm starting to suspect that my sound card doesnt support it... but luckely I have a USB soundcard at my parents place so I'll test that on sunday |

Odd... you may want to check the control panel again. I'm in XP32 right now so I can't check myself, but I was under the impression that Vista has more audio capture settings than XP, because they added an input mixing chain. In particular, it's supposedly the case now that the application no longer directly controls the capture format, which is now set in Control Panel, and the Vista audio system remixes the sound to the application's requested format (which is pretty much what nobody wants). |

Under my recording devices are my Mic (which is working fine), a Mic thats not connected, Line in that's not connected and nothing else. And yes disconnected and disabled devices are visible. |

Although I don't have the low sound issue, the option to control my capture device's (Creatix SAA7131) sound level is completely missing in Vista as well. Going to audio > windows mixer doesn't bring up any dialog. I can control the sound level of line-in (aux) on my sound-card, but controlling the sound level when I use a coax cable directly remains impossible.
I don't know if this provides any hints for what is going on to anyone, but I thought I'd share.

Ok after connecting my USB soundcard I found a way to record whats going on the screen (so my theory of my soundcard not supporting it was right), but now I have a new problem it will now only record the standard device. So it will record either the mic or the desktop sounds...
Seems to me that Virtual Dub isn't ready for Vista yet |

Uh, WTF? Microsoft removes or obscures a setting in the operating system and it's because my program "isn't ready for Vista"? |

Ok sorry for that.
But it would be nice if there could be made a workaround for it |

right click on Mic -> properties. There is the volume level.
Edit: it might be on another tab. I can't tell any more as I am not on my Vista comp right now (at school.)

Yes and it's not the mic of which the sound is soft so I don't see how that is going to help. I did find out that I was missing a way to record what you hear on the screen which I fixed by connecting another soundcard. Now the only problem is that I can't record my mic and whats happing on my screen at the same time because Vista is not allowing me to do that, so atm I have use 2 recording programs one recording my mic sound and one recording my computers sounds and then merging those which is a hassle. |
