I didn't know about Ctrl+1 or video/copy source frame to clipboard, despite the fact it wouldve been useful for years. Yeah, I'm dumb.

But anyway, for years, I had always been hoping that option would show up in the contextmenu when clicking on either of the video frames. In fact I was about to come here to suggest it there when the forum search showed that the feature existed, just in a place where I didn't think to look.

So now, my suggestion is the same, but I realize now it's potentially more complex than just mapping it through to ctrl+1: One would expect, when rightclicking a video frame, for any such contextmenu copy-to-clipboard function to take the image as it is, visually: scaled and all.

This isn't nearly as crucial as the ctrl+1 functionality, but it still seems like it's sort of a missing feature.

I suppose putting the actual ctrl+1 functionality in the contextmenu as an additional option wouldve saved me a lot of time:
"Copy source frame to clipboard" + "Copy source frame scaled to clipboard"

I don't feel very strongly about this, I think it might just save some silent users some time.

I don't know of any other program that does it this way. Do you?

If you want a scaled image, add a Resize filter and scale it. Or paste the normal image into a paint editor (which you have to do anyway) and scale it there...

Maybe the most easy way to achieve your wish, in the actual version of VirtualDub, is to use the "Resize" filter like raffriff42 is saying.

In VirtualDub, the left pane is showing the original frame, the right pane is showing the resulting output frame (after filters have been applied).

Via the Video-menu, you can copy the "source frame" (like you recently discovered), but you can also copy the "output frame".

Via the Options-menu > Keyboard shortcuts..., you can verify the "Bound Commands":
- Video.CopyOutputFrameImage = ctrl+é
- Video.CopySourceFrameImage = ctrl+&

Depending on your keyboard, these shortcuts may also be ctrl+2 and ctrl+1.

You can even set an other shortcut/keycombination for each of these two, if you would like that.

So, in fewer words, use the Resize filter, and ctrl+2 to copy the scaled frame to the clipboard.

Thanks all. I know I can do it that way. I'm mostly using virtualdub as a notepad for video files, not doing in-depth editing. I'm not ever going to be setting up filters here, but it might be serviceable since virtualdub will keep my current filter settings when dragging in a new video. It isn't as convenient to change filter settings as it is to change the zooms in the in/out frames tho.

raffriff42, if I use a 3d modeling program (max, for instance), and set scale properties on an object, and copy that object, I will get those scale properties in the clipboard. Now we'll have to talk about how analogous those situations are. From my point of view, when changing the AR or zoom of one of the images in virtualdub, I'm performing an edit operation, and a copy operation should bring that out. I can understand how my point of view will seem totally bizarre to you, but that's just how I use virtualdub: as a way to drag images out of a video and view them. I dont ever need to go into the filters dialog, and it appears as if I can do what I want with the 'view' options.

I can understand your point of view, it is sensible for a person to expect in other cases for the raw content stripped of any view-related parameters to be copied. It depends on the situation and point of view. That's why I eventually changed my suggestion to include both options.

I just have a philosophy of: if I can see it, and the program has it in a format which is easy to put into the clipboard, then why not let me put it in the clipboard?

Myself, I just wonder why the scaling and/or the aspect ratio is not correct (or is not what you like or prefer) in the original video.

Can't you just make that it is already correct while recording the video ?

And, if not, you can use an alternative way to treat the images, by first using the File > Export option in VirtualDub and output all, or a range of, images as an "image sequence" and afterwards open them in a picture editor like Paint, where you can use the "Resize" option.

Regards.
