I am a new newbie. Don't know much about the codec stuff. I don't want to bother with downloading DivX. So, I just use a Cinepak Codec by Radius that is on my system (I don't even know why it's there). I set Quality to 100. I processed a 785 KB file by justing hitting the [Output Playback] button at the bottom without using any filter or editing anything whatsoever. Then I saved the new file, which is now 1170 KB. Any idea on how to keep the size down? Thx.

Whatever codec you choose, it has to be available at the computer where the file shall be played too.

What does that mean? If I choose XYZ codec, send the AVI file to my friend, then my friend also needs XYZ codec installed on his computer to play the video? In that case, what is the most widely installed codec? I certainly want to save my friend's trouble to need to download a codec that does not happen to be on his computer.

1) Please edit your post next time. Itīs unpolite to double-post.
2) Do NOT, repeat N O T use Cinepak, Video1, InDeo or similar codecs. Thatīs like writing on stone tablets. Youīre only losing quality and getting giant files. Theyīre ancient.

3) Yes. The problem with compression is that something has to decompress it to watch. So both computers have to know how - thatīs why the CoDecīs there.

The most widely used? Well, IMO, itīd be DivX or XviD. I, myself, prefer DivX.

You cannot count on any codec to be installed on the other system, though.
On most Windows systems will be codecs like Cinepak, but as I said before, theyīre useless.

You might use some of MS own codecs, like the WMP(WMV?) codecs. They should be downloaded and installed upon opening, thus making it easier for the user.

Iīd just use DivX and tell him where to download the codec. Maybe give him the exact link, which would be http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX511.exe ATM. Iīm not sure how long itīll stay, probably at least until DivX 5.1.2 is released.
That file would be the standard, free version.
It contains all thatīs needed for watching DivX files. (Technically, also everything you need for encoding files, but the Pro version offers more to the encoer AFAIK.)

Newbie question about increased size after saving:

in a .mpeg video of 2,44Mb I inserted a little logo (9,15Kb).
When saving (selecting DivX compression), the file up to 7,80Mb !
A logo produces this big size? I don't understand if it's a normal process or it's a problem of my logo (9,15Kb)...
What can I do to insert a little title/logo without making this big increasing Mb?
Thanks wink.gif

Merely selecting DivX doesnīt accomplish anything. You have to specify how DivX shall encode.

If you have the time, download and read the DivX encoding guide you find at www.divx.com
The short solution is to selecect "1Pass Quality based" and chose a percentage of quality you want to have(70% should be good).

However, a logo WILL cause increase in size, as it introduces more edges which will require more bitrate(unless you want a logo thatīs all fuzzy at the edge).

The Divx version is 5.1.1, and -when I save- in "DivX codec properties" the "Variable bitrate mode" selected is "1-pass". Do you mean this?

In this mode "increase size after saving" is "only" from 2.7 to 6.5 instead of 7.5...

So, I'd like to try a logo with less resolution to check the size increase: how is the procedure?
Thank you a lot wink.gif

Itīs not the resolution - itīs the edge where the logo and the background meet.

No, I didnīt mean "1Pass" but "1Pass Quality based". Itīs important, because the other wonīt give you good results.

There are(IIRC) four modi: 1Pass, 1Pass Quality based and Multipass 1st pass and nth pass.

You should get a slider for the quantitizer(Quality) with the percentage to the right - NOT the bitrate slider.
Bitrate is fine, but if you have no need to achieve a certain filesize, why bother? (Calculating, multipass, etc)

I'm not doing something right. I looked for "1Pass, Quality Based" but couldn't find it. I'm using the DIvX 5.1.1 codec. The only IIRC values I found were 1Pass, Multipass 1st pass and Multipass nth pass...

Hmm.
What variant do you use? The free, or the pro?
Iīm using the pro, perhaps 1Pass Quality based is not available in the free version.

you have to disable profiles first, before having acces to quality based mode.

in the divx config screen, push the 'settings' button (i believe it is called that, its in the top right corner anyway, maybe its called profiles)

in the next screen disable profiiles. next + next and now you should be able to select 1 pass quality based mode.

Yes! After disabling profiles, it works now. 1-pass, quality-based does show up now. Let this be a lesson for all new people like me. Thank you! biggrin.gif

Ok, my file size isn't increasing like mad (IE, I am using XVid) but it is increasing enough to drive me mad. Using SimpleDIVX to encode VOB's to 2-pass QP Divx 1400KB split into two files.

Input for VDubMod (Following Mpeg2AVI's 2nd pass):
source0x80.mp3 188392KB (128Kbps)
source_.avi 1231413KB

Total source bytes is therefore 1419805KB and should be split into two files ~709903KB each.

What is actually output after VDubMod (Using the .vcf created by SimpleDivx) is:

source - Part 1.avi 738188KB
source - Part 2.avi 755256KB

Making the files too big even to overburn onto CD-R.

Granted, I know SimpleDivx is a little buggy at times (to be charitable) and often it creates scripts that VDubMod can't decipher at all, but this falls into the "so close but oh so far" category that I hope there's a way to force VDubMod to limit the file size or reduce the bitrate just a fraction without having to start from scratch.

i have no idea what SimpleDIVX is... if you want to control the bitrate you could do the encoding with VirtualDubMod directly, or try something like AutoGK which is another simple ripping program. It could also be that your XviD is just outdated and has sloppy rate control.
