I selected ffdshow compression and I croped the video as I desired but I got following error message when I try to save it as AVi.

"unable to initialize the output video codec. Check that the video codec is compatible with the output video frame size and that the settings are correct, or try a different one."

Where can I do the settings of frame size for ffdshow (mpeg 4) please tell me step by step, I am new user of virtualdub.

This is from the FAQ - see if it applies to you.

QUOTE
The source image format is not acceptable (error code -2)
There are three main causes for this to happen:

1. You are trying to compress a video in a format that is not supported by the codec. This will usually mean that the frame height and width are incorrect or that the color depth is not valid. To see what restrictions there are for a codec go to video-->compression and select the codec. The codec restrictions will now appear in a box right of the middle in this window.

2. It happens when trying to play the file in VirtualDub. This is the result of a codec that is trying to decompress a video stream, which it actually cannot handle. This shouldn't be happening, but there are a few codecs (e.g. Panasonic DV) that will try to decompress anything they can get their hands on. Check the file info in VirtualDub and look up the codec used for decompression. Then uninstall/disable this codec and open the file again and see if it plays. It might be possible that with opening the file you will get another type of error message, which will be dealt with below.

3. This error is also common with DivX and can have two main possible causes for it. First of all, it is recommended that in the advanced setting of the DivX config, you disable "Do not prompt with errors and warnings". Why this setting is not disabled by default I don't know, complain to DivX about it. If you now start your encode again an error message will appear. Usually there are problems with the logfile or the dimensions of your video are not correct. With DivX hardware profiles enabled, there are maximum resolutions you can encode with (e.g. 720x576 is the maximum res for the Home Theatre profile). It could also be that you have issues as described at number 1.

Hi,
I'm new too and I've been reading like 2 or 3 pages of this topic. I've changed the codec compression to DivX 6.8.5 and switch the config to 1 pass quality based (or something like that). The thing is, it only give me the old version (unmodified) of the video I'm desperatly trying to put subtitles on. The file size dropped a lot though, but I think it's just because it saves the file as it was before the modification I made...
Could you help me with that please? sad.gif

I've never understood the size issue either and I'm reluctant to learn because it all seems too technical, I just want to reformat a download so it will play on my commercial player, which supports divx and xvid (avi).

Here's what I do to get best results:

1) Load movie, ignore any message about 'Variable Bitrate.'

2) Select MPEG4 compression under Video > Compression (I think it's last one in the list).
Selecting MPEG4 results in a file my commercial player recognizes. Now I can watch the movie on my 60" digital TV.

3) Under Audio select 'Direct Stream Copy.'

4) Select 'Save as avi' under the File menu

5) Burn the resulting file to a CD (not a DVD in my case because my player can't see avi's on DVD media).

Sometimes the disk won't start, presumably because the player can't find the beginning or something it needs, maybe correct header info(?). To make sure it's going to work, I cutting a tad off the beginning of the movie which forces VD to create a proper header.

Then I process the remaining move by marking the Begin and End points of the range. That seems to take care of it. Another way of being sure the movie will play is to burn the final file at a slower speed (in my case 24x makes sure of it).

If I start with a huge file, I process it in 2 or 3 pieces using Begin and End to specify the range. Now I can be sure the resulting files will fit on a CD or maybe 2 CDs.

To those that know what they're doing, this may all seem somewhat comical but it works for me and might work for others who are baffled by the subject.

Hi,

I took a break from my video editing, to only come back and forget all the small things I had learned. I think a good thing to add to this topic would be the difference between:

Direct Stream Copy and Full processing mode.

Case in point: I went from a 60GB file that I had recorded using Virtual dub, used a filter, and ended up with a 80GB file after saving.

I compressed my file using lagarith to store, but the file only compressed down to about 27GB now. I know I did something wrong in the process...usually my files are 10GB or less after I compress them with lagarith.

I am planning on using XVID, but I really have no idea what processing mode to choose, direct stream? Full? Normal recompress? Fast?

My guess is my mistake was using "full processing mode" while applying a filter and then saving as a lossless intermediate? If anyone knows where I went wrong, it might be useful for other people who make my mistake with file size increases while saving.

The 60 to 80Gb change is probably just due to the compression
Its all dependant on each frame, and filtering that changes the images will change the file size
eg if you smooth it all out, the file will be smaller, if you sharpen it'll probably be bigger

Lossless files will always be enormous
For a smaller final file you can use x264vfw or XVid as output codecs
X264vfw is the newer one that gives smaller files for the same size as XVid (H264 is it's compression type)
XVid's older but more compatible with old hardware players

For x264vfw settings and download you can see here
http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...1157&hl=x264vfw

[edit]
ps for filters to work, you have to use full processing mode so you didn't do anything wrong
