Hi sorry if this question has already been asked. I used virtual dub earlier this year and it was working fine. But I've had to restore my computer and started from new. Now I'm not sure what filters I'm missing but I'm unable to open mp4 files, I installed quicktime, and ffdshow now I'm able to open the video file but I only get sound and no picture. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong? Would someone be kind enough to enlighten me please? If I opened this thread in the wrong forum my apologies. I hope someone can help me out. Thanks in advance.

Is the screen just black?
If so check the display options, turn off all the direct* things and see if it works, then turn back on until you find the one causing it

Thank you for trying to help out, really appreciate it.

The screen is green...before that I couldnt open it at all, I kept getting "Missing codec AVC1" so I installed ffdshow now the file opens but the screen stays green.

I tried choosing full instead of direct as you suggested but it's not helping sad.gif

Sorry, I meant the display options in the preferences
On the menu
Options->preferences
Left hand side, select Display
Untick all the 'use DirectX(3D)'
Click ok until the preferences close

See if that helps

That didnt help either sad.gif I used the same files I saved into a folder so I dont know what else I'm missing. Maybe it's a codec for media files? Also I couldnt open up the files at all until I installed quicktime player for the computer as well. It wouldnt open up until I installed the player because I thought that might help

There are 2 quicktime plugins - IIRC in the one that needs quicktime there's a setting (tick extended options when opening a file) that should be set to 2 (or 3?) for it to work, I seem to recall it gives a green screen otherwise

fccHandlers is the newest one http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=7&t=19488
If there's a 'no codec' message, check FFDShow's vfw configuration dialog and tick any required codecs

There are also plugins that handle nearly everything (but don't do direct stream copy) like the FFMPeg plugin in my sig

Thank you so much! I'll try it out tomorrow and let you know if it works. I don't quite get the extended options when opening the file though

On the file menu, open a video, and on the dialog that shows the file name, tick the box for extended options. The plug in options should be shown after you pick a file

If you don't need direct stream copy, I'd just use the FFMpeg plugin at it loads almost everything (link is in my sig)
If you need direct stream copy, then fcchandler quicktime plugin (link to fcchandlers plugins are in my sig as well)

-----
On the page with the full list of plugins, it's worth reading everything there, as the first lines say that fcchandlers original page is offline, and mirrors are posted at the bottom
