Hello reader and thank you for reading this.
Anyways, I have enjoyed the use of Virtualdub to compress my AVI video files, but using Windows Live Movie Maker (Vista) outputs huge files. I have installed the WMV Plugin for Virtualdub and followed these instructions by ale5000, so I wouldn't have the "missing codec" message.
| QUOTE | 1) Make sure you have ffdshow-tryout ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/ ) and not ffdshow. 2) If you use 32-bit VirtualDub you should have 32-bit ffdshow-tryout instead if you use 64-bit VirtualDub you should have 64-bit ffdshow-tryout. 3) Go in the VFW configuration (yellow icon, many user incorrectly use the red one) of ffdshow-tryout => Decoder => Codecs => then set WMV1/7, WMV2/8, WMV3/9 to wmv9. Like this:
This should make the wmv files working.
For the mp4 open them with MediaInfo ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/mediainfo/ ) and tell what video/audio format it is. |
The only problem is I still can't play the video in virutaldub, because when I press play I get this:

I'm sure the problem is linked to the audio codec that the wmv file uses which is WMA, but I don't know any solution to this. |

Yep, you need an acm audio codec for that 0162 (msoft wma) And.... there isn't one
I'd suggest using the directshow plugin instead (or the ffmpeg one)

So there isn't an acm audio codec that I could use, oh well.
Do you where I could find the directshow plugin for Virtualdub? |

EDIT: Double answer (sorry) / maybe better two answers than no answer :-)
If you ever look for filters or plugins, there is a specific thread for this on the VirtualDub forum:
Starting from the startpage of the forum: > http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php
Then, click (beneath the VirtualDub header), on "Virtualdub filters and filter development"
Pinned: List of Input plugins (or Links to VirtualDub filters and Input Plugins)
There you should find "Input plugins" (32-bit and 64-bit versions to combine with xx-bit installation of VirtualDub itself): > http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=7&t=19488 |

Thanks you two!
I actually didn't notice that the directshow plug was linked in there. I'll check it out, thanks again.
Edit: Hmm something doesn't seem right. I've installed both the directshow and ffmpeg plugins, but I still get the same error.
If It helps,
this is what MediaInfo told me about the video I'm trying to open
| QUOTE | Audio ID: 2 Format: WMA Format profile: Pro Codec ID: 162 Codec ID/Info: Windows Media Audio Description of the codec: Windows Media Audio 10 Professional - 384 kbps, 48 kHz, 2 channel 24 bit (A/V) 1-pass CBR | |

I suppose you know, but if not:
1) Installing an inputdriver plugin means: unzip the file and copy the *.vdplugin to the "plugins32" subfolder of the VirtualDub installation (in case of the FFMPeg inputdriver plugin, there is also a subfolder with files in it, that you have to copy as a subfolder to plugins32)
2) When in the "Open video file" dialogbox of VirtualDub, you have to: - first select the WMV file (single click on it) - then at "Files of type" : select "DirectShow input driver" or "FFMPeg Supported Files" (depending on the inputplugin that you want to use) - finally click on the "Open"-button
I just did a test with latest version of Windows Live Movie Maker, version 2012 (Build 16.4.3505.0912) One can choose to "Save movie" as a WMV or an MP4 I made a WMV.
When opening it in VirtualDub: - with the WMV-plugin, I get a VirtualDub program failure with a crash in the WMV-plugin - with the FFMPeg-plugin, it opens without a problem (File information: Video = wmv3 / Audio = wmav2 - with the DirectShow-plugin, it opens also (Video = WMVideo Decoder DMO / Audio = WMAudio Decoder DMO)
I think that if you can play the file via Windows Media Player (WMP), than it should be possible to open it in VirtualDub, via the DirectShow plugin. You can always check, from within the WMP, via Help > About Windows Media Player > Technical support information, beneath the header "Video codecs" and "Audio codecs", which 'formats' are supported. At mine, the "wmv3" videocodec and the "0162" audio codecs are supported. What at yours ? |

Yes, I have installed the plugins in the correct folder of Virtualdub.
But I didn't know that you had to manually select the video and then the select the correct plugin, instead of a drag and drop. Anyways it actually works now with the FFMPeg Plugin.
I can play the video through Windows Media player, strangely in the "Windows Help and Support" it says WMP comes with Windows Media Audio, Windows Media Video, and MP3 Codecs. I know that I can open AVI Files that contain MPEG-2, H.264, and MPEG-1 (the one made for Bandicam). |

When you drag and drop a file into virtualdub it looks through all the plugins and goes "hmm, now which of you is the best one to open this kind of file?" The plugins then reply with how well they fit that kind of file Specific plugins like the wmv plugin are good matches for wmv and don't match anything eles General plugins that read lots of files are ok matches for most files Virtualdub then picks the best match it can find
So in this case, the wmv one trumps all the others and gets used
If you want to make sure you use a specific one, you have to pick it from that drop down list

@dloneranger Thanks again for giving us an extra word of explanation.
@Nelsonngyn0 You saw that Windows Media Player comes with a range of video and audio codecs, and eventhough WMP can open most kind of videofiles, VirtualDub seems not be able to...
The thing that troubles most people is that there are two kinds of codecs: - "Video for Windows"-codecs : rather used by longer existing and 'older' programs (codecs indicated in WMP tech info by "type" = ICM and ACM) - "DirectShow"-codecs : used by more recent and 'newer' programs like the actual Windows Media Player (indicated with type = DMO)
By default VirtualDub is using the "Video for Windows" codecs (if installed and/or available), but thanks to the DirectShow inputdriver plugin, VirtualDub can also make use of the DirectShow codecs.

Thank you two again. I have learned much more about using virtualdub than I thought. I can perfectly play all the wmv files and compress them using virtualdub.
I do have a question about another plugin. I've heard that there was/is a plugin or filter that allows someone to have multiple video and audio tracks in virtualdub, unfortunately the person who told me said that it was hosted on megaupload and is therefore gone. I believe someone here would know where to find this plugin. |

1) Do you mean "join", "merge" or "append" multiple videos, one after another: if the several AVI-videos are encoded with the same video and audio codecs and settings AND have the same framesize, then you can append them by opening the first video and append each other video via File > Append AVI segment... (if the AVI's have a consecutive filename-numbering, like video_01.AVI, video_02.AVI, and so on, they will load automatically).
2) Do you mean "add video's to a kind of 'queue' or 'joblist' to treat them later": instead of use File > Save as AVI..., you can use File > Queue batch operation > Save as AVI... to add them to the joblist After that you can start the treatment via File > Job control... > Start
3) Do you still mean something else ? |

1)Nope, Though I already knew that.
2)Nope, But now I know I can Queue multiples jobs overnight.
3)Yes. What I mean is having different tracks so that I can put images over-top my video wherever I want to or add different audio tracks to one. Something like what Sony Vegas or Camtasia can do (Non-linear editing (?)). |

So, maybe something like this : applying a filter with an image to a certain range of frames :
a Youtube video with some explanation, thanks to JimmyRcom2:
Sorry, if I still do missunderstand you...
... and actually, VirtualDub does not support multiple video- or audio-tracks. |

Hey, no worries thanks for the link to the tutorial.
Lastly, Viritualdub doesn't support multiple video or audio tracks and there isn't a plugin that could add that functionality? |
