I'm having a very hard time as I have the most recent version of Virtual Dub and I installed the WMV and MP4 plugins but I still can't get them to work? When I try to load a WMV file in virtual Dub it goes thru the motions and loads just like it would on an AVI file but it says "missing codec" I've tried to follow the instructions of others that I've Googled and loaded FFDShow and Direct Show and probably three other fixes and nothing works? When I try to load an MP4 I get nothing but a black screen? There must be an easier, updated way to load something and easily enable it. I tired to follow the instructions to enable the VFW configuration in FFDShow and it's not user-friendly. Please advise?

1) Make sure you have ffdshow-tryout ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/ ) and not ffdshow.
2) If you use 32-bit VirtualDub you should have 32-bit ffdshow-tryout instead if you use 64-bit VirtualDub you should have 64-bit ffdshow-tryout.
3) Go in the VFW configuration (yellow icon, many user incorrectly use the red one) of ffdshow-tryout => Decoder => Codecs => then set WMV1/7, WMV2/8, WMV3/9 to wmv9.

This should make the wmv files working.

For the mp4 open them with MediaInfo ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/mediainfo/ ) and tell what video/audio format it is.

A normal codec (directshow) isn't usefull in VirtualDub, for the audio in VirtualDub you need an ACM codec.

You can find it here: http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=7&t=19488

You need either the hacked DivX 3.11 codec

http://www.videohelp.com/download/divx_3.11alpha.zip

or just the audio codec part of it

http://www.videohelp.com/download/DivXAudi...ressor_4.02.zip

For WMA Professional, you'll have to convert to something usable first

@DarrellS: The one specified by me contain the "Windows Media Audio" ACM codec while the one you linked is the hacked "DivX;-) Audio" codec (the format is the same).

WMA Professional is 0x0162 so this isn't the case.

Thanks this post has been hugely helpful for me. If I DO have a WMA Professional (0x0162) file then how do I get the audio to work? I think that's what's causing my file to not render or play.

Do have to convert it out of WMA Pro? I'm trying to do this all without any conversion... thanks!

@anidealworld: What are you trying to do?
If you don't want the conversion just use Direct Stream Copy.

Basically I get this error when I try to load a file:

---------------------------
VirtualDub Error
---------------------------
No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format.
(source format tag: 0162)
---------------------------

I made the movie in Windows Live Movie Maker in Win 7 and was using VirtualDub for post processing and to convert back to mp4, but it just can't seem to find the audio decoder.

If you use "Audio => Direct Stream Copy" VirtualDub will copy the WMA Professional audio without any conversion in the .avi container (the preview still won't work but the File => Save as AVI... will work).

If you also need to convert the audio you have to extract it and convert with another program (which I don't know).
