I get an error 418,unsupported video format, whatever format I try to set.
The TV-card is a jetway JW-TV 878M.
It works fine in compatible mode.
What's wrong ?

Next question:
Which format should I choose for the following:
PAL B&W picture, 3-4 fps, and I'd like to store several hundred hours on a 35G hard disk (you probably guessed it, it's for my CCTV system :-) )

Re: error 418, have you tried "Set custom format?" Good formats to use are RGB or YUY2, if you can get them.

My suggested format for capturing CCTV (assuming no sound):
384 x 288 resolution, 3.125 fps (25 / 8)
DivX 5.0.2 codec, 1-pass quality based, Quantizer = 2, Max keyframe interval = 1 (every frame a keyframe)
Should be able to fit days (maybe weeks?) on a 35G drive.

However, getting VirtualDub to utilize the full 35G may be complicated if you have the drive formatted as FAT32. I have one FAT32 drive that I dedicated to capturing, but I still haven't figured out how to break the 4G barrier.

Never create avis bigger than 2 Gig, maybe they will play but you will get problems when editing them later, use the spill drive option to capture. It is no matter of the OS, it is a matter of the file itself that you should not go higher.

Thanks, BaronVlad. Finally solved my problem!

I always thought the Help was kind of vague on this. For anyone interested, here is what worked for me: Under Capture->Capture drives is a Spill setup menu. You have to click "Add spill drive," and type in the Path (say, "D:\"). (Leave everything else at default.) Then choose Capture->Enable multisegment capture, and VirtualDub will capture to multiple files (with names like "CAPTURE.00.avi", "CAPTURE.01.avi", etc), none of them larger than 2G, up to the full capacity of the drive.

Wonderful! biggrin.gif

Vlad, what kind of problems are you talking about?

I have worked with large capture files: WinXP, NTFS, 720x576, 25 fps PAL, Huffyuv filesizes upto 100 GB (or sometimes HQ MJPEG, filesizes upto 25 GB). So far I have only done very basic editing (mainly just setting the exact start and end frame with "Select Range"), a few filters (mainly croping and deinterlacing), Lame CBR for audio and two pass DivX for video, but I have had no problems at all.

Where's the catch? I wonder if the problems you mentioned surface only with more advanced editing? What exactly will not work right with files larger than 2 GB?

Hi Org,
I did no advanced editing, just the same as you did smile.gif But also with XP running and NTFS I had problems loading the files correctly. No problems during playback, cause the filters managed that. If it works for you, it is wonderful, for me it did not. Because of that I use the spill drives with Win XP as I did with 98SE. I dont want to cap a whole movie and after that becoming angry, cause i have to delete everything.

Irrespective of what people are claiming here, even OpenDML AVI files were never allowed to be bigger than 2 GB in the original specs ... just because workarounds were made in the past years doesnt mean its a good thing to do ...
