Hi,

it's well known on forums like this that creative sound cards cause frames dropping during capture whatever CPU you have. I suppose it's better to have always 25.0000000000 or 29.97xxxxxxx fps during capture, but Soundblasters don't wish it. So I have always (when I set 25fps) fps from 24.xxxxxx to 25.xxxxxxxxx. AV synch is suffering from it but can you tell if also video is somehow spoiled from this "around 25 fps" capturing when the source is pure 25fps? Can i expect any special video artefacts, which won't be there if capture card will always have 25.00000000000000000000000 fps?

mostly strobing and jitter when you bring 29.976fps progressive down, and bringing 29.976fps interlaced down doesn't always look to nice either, but it looks much better than converting 29.976 interlace to 29.976 progressive (same for 25 int to 25 prog). not sure with bringing 24fps progresive up though. best thing to do is leave it at the source frame rate, unless it's interlaced and you intend to use a codec that doesn't support interlacing (like divx/vp3/most out there), in which case you need a good 3:2 pulldown filter (I haven't used virtualdub's internal one, so I don't know how good it is)

If your capture source in an ATi All-in-Wonder, then use ATiMMC's TV program to capture to MPEG-1, it's the best thing for it, and their de-interlacer produces as perfect a picture as you can get with the card, you'll just have to convert it afterwards if you need to.

Hmm, ATI should have the best deinterlacing algorithm. They probably know bugs of their own cards very well.

MMC can show you 0% dropped frames but when you open this AVI in vDub, it often indicate desynchronization.

BTW what is the purpose of the 'visual masking' option in MMC capture settings? I use version 7.2.

firstly, if you're able to, update, you'll get better sync for all caps.
secondly, DON'T USE AVI. ATiMMC isn't capable of capturing to AVI properly (ticks me off), just go with high bitrate MPEG-1, around 3mbps will get fairly OK quality with perfect sync, just convert it later to your prefered storage/distribution format if that's why you're capturing

visual masking is similar to Divx's psychovisual enhancements, removes stuf most people aren't able to see from the video to improve the quality of what we can see, but it's alot more basic than divx's is

Ok, which version would you recommend? I'm still using old Rage 128 fury pro with 128 pro chipset and official support site offers only 7.2 version. I don't know if installation program of higher versions, which can be downloaded from support sites for newer cards, will let me to install MMC.

Oh, didn't know they were that behind for the rage128furypro. I use v7.7.0.1 right now, but I don't know if you'll be able to use that with your chip. you could try, it's under the all-in-wonder8500DV drivers section

either way, just stick to mpeg-1
