Hi there.
So, when I start to capture my PS2 with VirtualDub using my capture device, it says I have around 80-120% CPU usage, meanwhile Windows Task Manager says I'm using about 5-9%. I'm using the x.264 codec and before that I used Xvid. With x.264, I can see in Task Manager that several cores are being used, but I still get the discrepancy and I still get dropped frames when I capture.
I have a fairly new (bought around a year ago) 8-core i7 cpu, I also configured my comp to use my graphics card (nVidia 860m) when using Vdub, but it seems not to have done anything. Can anyone help me record without dropped frames? Should I get a different codec?
Thanks for any help. |

Dropped frames are normally being caused by lack of CPU-time to compress/encode the data or hughe datarate to be written to the hard disk.
Probably you did not have the problem when using the Xvid codec ?
Maybe the compression factor for H264 is set too high (asking more CPU-time) or set too low (asking more disk speed to write the data). Probably it is a fact of finding the correct balance.
A work-around should be to capture in Xvid and do the post-processing in H264.
Do you use the x264vfw codec: > http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/
And please read the advise and sample settings of dloneranger: > http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...1157&hl=x264vfw |

So I messed around with the settings some more, I set the compression factor high and low, I changed the presets to fast or slow and I messed with the colourspace. At best the lag stopped for a few seconds but then came back after about 20 seconds or so. By changing presets I did manage to get the CPU usage down to at lowest 40-50% though, still way higher than the 9% Task Manager says, but something. It didn't stop the lag however.
But I don't get why any of this should matter. I have a new SSD, 8-core CPU with nVidia GPU. Why is Vdub giving me at least 40% higher CPU usage than task manager and why would it be a disk problem if I have an SSD? I'm not even recording 1080p Battlefield or anything, this is 720x576 PS2 footage and not even lowest quality records without lag.
I have a fairly cheap EZCap capture card, is that the problem? |

Maybe someone else on this forum can give you better ideas...
Still two things: - does it make a difference in using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of VirtualDub (assuming that you have a 64-bit operating system) ? >> in case of you should do a test, then a corresponding xx-bit audio- and video-codec must be used - can it be a virusscanner that is continuously checking and interfering ? >> if so, is it possible to temporarely disable it ? |

I used Veedub64, I presume that's the 64-bit version? I used the x.264 64-bit version. No improvement. RAM usage is only about 30% anyway and doesn't spike when I capture. I turned on silent/gaming mode on my Avast (I don't think it's possible to disable it without uninstalling), no difference. In task manager as well Avast uses a fairly small amount of RAM and 0 CPU.
Thanks a lot for your help anyway, I'm really disappointed, to be able to capture without lag was one of the reasons I bought this laptop. |

Virtualdubs cpu usage measures the time spent in drivers etc as well (kernal time) so maybe that's why there's a difference
The main trouble with capturing is that the pc's doing other things as well, and any interruption longer than 1 frame can cause a dropped frame To get around that there are a few things that can work around specific problems
High cpu use use a lossless codec +they're much faster and use less cpu time -use more disk space
Pc's interrupting capture to do other things If the pc's hogging the disk -> save to a different hard drive to the one the OS is on
On a hyper-threading cpu like the i7, it might be better to turn off hyper-threading when capturing In theory, you'll have fewer cores but each one will be faster
Close all other programs - even the ones that don't seem to do much They might do some bookkeeping every 10 mins or so that interrupts the capture just because it needs the hard drive for half a second Basically anything that uses the hard drive or needs to use the cpu's is an enemy eg windows update does a lot of hard drive activity, if that does a check for updates in the background and you're saving to the same drive as the OS then there's a chance you'll be interrupted
You might want to try changing the disk I/O options in the prefs - buffered may work better for you?
And then there's the other possibility - some capture devices are just awful

Just wondering--what would be a good lossless codec and how do I get it/get it to work with vdub? Thank you |

There quite a few out there
Personally I usually use http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html
Off the top of my head there's also
UTVideo http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Ut-Video-Codec-Suite MSU http://www.compression.ru/video/ls-codec/index_en.html
