Forgive me if this is the wrong forum section!
The Problem I can’t get either version of VDub (32/64) to capture video and audio from my capture card.
When I click ‘Capture AVI’, the window changes, but I see / hear nothing.
When I click Capture>Settings, and ok, then I see and hear (and the VU meters move) the card’s output. When I click either ‘Test Video Capture’ or ‘capture’ I get ‘unable to start video capture’, and the preview window returns to black and the audio stops.
Reclicking ok on Capture>Settings brings the output back.
Interesting aside though, it DOES create a 10-12.Kb avi file that doesn’t crash any player program, but they don’t do anything, either.
This occurs regardless of what output I select on my card (resolution and color space).
Where do I even begin to start diagnosing this?
Thanks SO much in advance, I have had little success getting anyone to help with this.
Shawn
Lots of details version: I’ve shot still photography and some video forever. This year I wanted to get into professional videography, so I pieced together a professional camcorder over last year. Turns out, there is no way to get the data out of the camera like there was in the old days. So, I got a VCR for it, and the only high resolution way out of the VCR is called SDI (Serial Digital Interface). SSOooo…. I finally found a capture card for to plug in the VCR that has the tape from the camera in it. It’s made by Aja, called the Corvid 3G. I know it works because I found a piece of their software that controls the board called Control Panel that had no problem recognizing it. In fact, it offered to update the firmware on the board (apparently old board). Due to a glitch that Aja knew about (but I and the internet didn’t), it misrecognized the board and bricked it. They nicely enough, RMA’d the board and sent me a brand new one! (Currently, the new Corvid board is seen in ControlPanel as a KONA EXPRESS). However, the Corvid series is only sold to OEM’s who then design a software package around it. For that reason, Aja offers little to no support to people like me, and I have blown my budget trying to get that camera to work. (I thought I could just firewire my way into my current laptop, or that there would be a cheap adapter for the old camera (old camera = old accessories = cheap). I was wrong-O! Aja *did* suggest that DirectShow filters might work, and pointed to where I could get a generic Aja version to test. Didn’t help.
SSSSSSOoooooo…. There’s a ton of software out there to capture with. In fact, if you use all the add ons they make, even windows movie maker isn’t bad. But none of them seem to be able to successfully pull in at LEAST video from this $#%^&*() board, and I can’t afford to buy another and try them til it works. Using the most new drivers off of the Aja site, control panel, control room, windows media encoder 9, MediaNXS (trial), Aja Machina, and Adobe PS CS6 (trial) all see the card. Adobe CS4 premiere portable (trial), and ACDsee Pro does not. None of them can record from the card. None of them can preview live from the card when it is fed. I have tried 525/29.9 and 1080p settings via control panel. VideoShow expressions (only on SD settings) can invoke a limited control panel, but can’t change the color space, but it DOES preview video from the card. When I click record, it records, but the ‘space used’ never moves from 0.00MB. And, then there is no file when I stop. Ulead VideoStudio 10.0.0110.0 SE DVDdoes not preview, does not appear to see the card, and throws an error (failed to initialize the video capture plugin. Another program may be using it or the file has been moved, cannot create the video capture filter. [15001:71:1] and [15023:4:2]) when I select ‘capture video’ with the little camera+triangle. I found where you can change capture plugin. It is set to Ulead DirectShow Capture Plugin. When I set it to DVB-T (apparently for a tv card), Ulead changes its’ tune to no card installed. So, apparently, it *can* see the card. VDub I explained at the top. I’ve been monkeypoking Graphedit. If I build a graph using Aja Capture Source 0 and any framerate/resolution, the program suggests ‘AVI Decompressor’ chained to ‘Video Renderer’ VMR Input0 for the video, and ‘Default DirectSound Device’ Audio Input pin (rendered) for the audio. This pops up a window that plays the video and the audio from the card no problem (even when the card is not fed, it outputs test tones, and ‘Video Disconnected’ against a blue screen constantly). I have uninstalled and run CCleaner to try to remove anything card-related, and just load certain parts. I have dumped windows completely, unpartitioned, formatted and repartitioned (?) and reloaded windows and put stuff in one part at a time. All to no avail.
Another hint. Every time I invoke a program, ControlPanel changes from blank to ‘In use by OEM Application’ (unless I turn on ControlRoom, then it says ‘in use by ControlRoom’). When I exit the programs properly (no hang-ups), CP continues to believe that the card is hooked and won’t let me make any changes. I have to physically cycle the computer.
Too Many Details version: Computer is a pc: • 8 Gigs of ram, 3.33Ghz Xeon 5470 quad core processor, nvidia 250 GTS gpu (installed in a x16 slot), 320GB 7200 rpm sata 2 hdd for OS and for programs, 320Gb 5400 rpm sata 2 scratch disk. AMI Bios (most current, and stable)

Long time since I have seen a problem described in full as yours is. Phaeron is the developer and will need to wait for him to appear which he does every week or so, very busy with work and many other projects he tells us
I would test with Virtual OS using snapshots or backup image each time save install fresh os each time
Until Phaeron visits here again to reply which can be any time. You have written about the Aja Control Panel and the Aja Control Room non of which I know of. But what I would try is not installing those instead install test with only the drivers for the device Aja Win Drivers 10.4.1-x64 alone first then after with also the Aja DirectShow 8.0.0.12 codec filters installed
First though with as you have it revisit Graph-Edit remove the render filters and connect a output file source to the chain. So it can write to a file, if can do that use MediaInfo to see what streams are inside the AVI container if that is what the written video container is
After have a look at the filters for the device and see what other options there are maybe something that can help further down the line. Many options here depends on what your device filters accept and offer. Maybe the filters are generic say x264 video and aac audio so could use other filters to connect !
Then try without ever having the Aja Control Panel and Room installed only install the drivers (not registry other cleaned). Do same test again and see if the results are the same. If so then try with other softwares since then there should be no limitation but the drivers. If fails try find better drivers to use and if find any that do work with other softwares make a note and post since those will also maybe needed information for your posted problem
Other than that you're using hardware I know nothing of. Advice is similar to what I would probably would do in same situation to solve or find more info of the problem. That said maybe it is the board replacement at fault or more the beta drivers or filters that are the root of the problems. Have never known a board to be sold without driver problems they all have them. First to market with less time for full testing. Testing can be done with people who buy the devices faster than any test team can
Re TV mode: I would try other modes for connect, testing and capture |

Thanks!
I will try the things you list.
Here's something interesting. I didn't know vlc had a capture mode, and it works! Why does it and not Vdub? Same environment, after all...

So...
any other thoughts?
Turns out it only works for about 10 seconds in VLC, then it goes to digital static. Sure would love some help!

Maybe the information in following thread can help you out of the problem: > http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=4&t=22092
Selecting "0 Capture Device" in the Audio-menu, was the solution for the "Unable to start video capture" problem. |

I was *EXCITED*!
So, I start Vdub 1.10.4 in admin mode. Says 'no video source', 'no audio source'. I click Capture>Settings>Ok, and voila, I have pic and test tone. Set an output file name, and click Capture, and no good.
But now it reads no video and audio 0-capture device and 1-realtek (mobo sound device).
So, I try invoking the cards' software (Control Panel) and same results.
I know this means something, but.... what?
I tried to locate my copy of graphedit, but in the time it has taken to locate it, Vd went from looking ok, to squiggly, to crashed!
Crash reason: Access Violation
out of bounds memory access occurred in veedub64, then the address. (shrugs).
Now what? |

I've never uploaded anything to Youtube, so I took a screen video of the process. Here's the video:

Anybody else? I really, really want to get going with this.
Thanks!

May I ask you to once follow the CAPTURING PROCEDURE in following thread
http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=6&t=21444
Then come back and to tell us the results. |

No dice.
Same results. ( I did a screen video if you want to watch it.) There was no output. It continued to say the same things.

Sorry, the problem seems to be complicated.
To find out if the problem is really due to the card and its drivers, ... are you able to capture your screen or webcam via VirtualDub ? If this should give the same problem, then you should - at my opinion - look for the cause of the problem elsewhere.
On the other hand, watching your video, when setting Capture Filter, can you please try with - FourCC : YUY2 and - VideoFormat, something more standard like 720p 25.00 ? |

Ok!
The camera is a NTSC 4:3 SD @ 600 lines/59.94. The capture cards' closest setting is 525/60.
A question occurs:
Maybe there are conflicts in codecs and filters? How can I remove all of them and their registry entries? |

Maybe you could create a new profile and use that. I'm not sure if this would stop all filters been loaded trial and error
With XP operating system (OS) Right mouse over the My Computer icon (from desktop or start menu or other location) and then System Properties you have Hardware - Hardware Profiles. Also maybe able to use System - User Profiles though I'm not sure if any would help have never used them
Or use Virtual OS XP would need software VMPlayer, MicrosoftVM, VirtualBox or other. Higher than XP likes of Win7 and 8 this is part of the startup or similar I have read maybe quicker and easier to use
You could try manually having a new system drive backup but I wouldn't recommend this. Not unless like to play and have plenty of time to do so. Before eventually give up and restore the system drive and do one of the two above
The above assumes you rather work with OS as is and not install OS afresh. If you do decide to install OS again then ignore the above
Had a look at the video and seems everything is there so should be working. I think this one may need Phaeron to figure it out maybe some code needs a small adjustment for it |

Well,
I'm using windows 7 professional 64 bit. I'm not sure about profiles there.
I've tried reloading and reformatting, and adding things one at a time. Didn't help.
Very frustrating!!
Thanks for all the input!

@bentpin
On my question to test with other settings in "Capture filter ..." you just answered "ok".
Did you really tried with settings like FourCC = "YUY2" or "UYVY", and videoformat = "720p 25.00" or something with "xxx 29.970" ? What options do you have in Video Source / Reference Source / Audio Source ? Does it change things when you check "Video passthrough" ?
I admit, I am only guessing, but you never know ... I'm still thinking that it must have something to do with the settings in "Capture filter...".
To be good, you should already see the video and hear the sound when Video > Preview is checked (when in VirtualDubs Capture modus). |
